This is mostly out of curiosity, but if the current arguments over who will have control over the net culminate in a split, does CCP have any idea of which side they would land on?

/me thinks CCP should "claim" it, then move all their employees to telehouse and stage a siege until they get what they want. They could also smacktalk the governments on IRC. It'd be just like a real corp war (altho without the killing, but I'm sure something could be improvised). |

Fiber connections are very cheap to connect.
IPv6 has been out for years, with no strings attached.
Yet neither are actually used... Why do you think this is?
Keeping the net expensive, while also keeping offendants easy to track.

doesnt ip v 6 have a different ip scheme than the current ip scheme that is currently being used by the internet now.
if we were to switch over there would have to be a 1 day down time for the internet while all the worlds isps rework there computers to match this new scheme.
the ip scheme we are on now is a x.x.x.x while ip 6 is x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

i heard "they" were trying to make it where you could legally say what could and couldn't travel through your fiber lines.
Example you could allow Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson content through your lines and nothing else.

In content terms, you may be right ... but the actual physical network of cables, is owned by people.

Yes, well when the infrastructure and capital required for the net to function is entirely privately controlled and commodified, then it will be controlled. -----------------

In student-internet, it won't wake up and work properly until after midday, it will work properly for three hours, then it will muck about until 3am, before crashing completely until after midday the next day.
In OAP-internet, it will work from 7am until 7pm, with a 34 minute Down time just after lunch. It will however, be very slow to do anything at all.
In toddler internet, it will work incredibly fast all of the time, with a 5 minute break every once in a while. However, it will not do anything you tell it to do.
In Essex-girl internet, it works mostly in the evenings. Will succum to your every demand, and fulfils your requirements and still asks for more. Will do anything for anyone at any time.

You don't need downtime to switch to ipv6 - just the right module for your os. In windows, it's a simple matter of installing the ipv6 protocol.

Interesting topic. Don't really know how the internet can be controlled. The only way I suspect they can only control it within a country's own boundaries. Just imagine if we had no single country controlling us like how the Internet goes.

Internet is more or less centralized, if it split totally so noone can pass from one to other, it would ruin the internet economy.
Other than that, its an novelty.

The "control" over the internet the OP was speaking of is not the kind of control where someone can dictate to you what you host on your website, or some sort of big brother watching your every move. Its an ongoing arguement between the USA and the UN/other nations about who has control of things like the top level name servers, domain naming additions/control, and a lot of other stuff that generally doesn't _directly_ affect the consumer.
On one hand, the idea of this type of control being entirely held by one country is a bit scary to me. It lends itself to a dictatorship.
Then again, the idea of the UN or some more disparate collection of countries forming a commitee to control this stuff is equally as scary. Just take a look at the UN to see how badly these groupings usually work and imagine that applied to the internet
