Edited by: MrJack on 20/10/2005 11:12:40 Edited by: MrJack on 20/10/2005 11:10:09 Light missiles sucks... (again). I've compared standard launchers of both groups.
Rocket launcher I vs Standard Missile Launcher I Foxfire Rocket I vs Flameburst Light Missile I
RL I has ROF 4s vs SML ROF 15s Foxfire does 25 dmg vs Flabeburst 75 dmg
dmg/s is: 6,25 vs 5
In case when range doesn't matter, "worse" rockets have 25% better dmg than "better" light missiles per second. When fight lasts 30 seconds, you can theoretically make 187,5 dmg with simple Rockets vs 150 dmg with Light Missiles.
What's going on?

Insofar as I understand your question, you are asking why rockets do more damage over time than missiles?
Simply, because they are designed that way; shorter range, higher DPS.
Whats the issue? _______________________________

think on these therms:
rockets = blasters light missiles = rails
blasters do more damage than rails, but they have shorter range as a tradeoff -------------------

I see, i thought rockets are just the simpliest missiles in game and light missiles are more advanced and should make more dmg...

They do inflict more damage than rockets, per single hit.

It's more complicated than simply damage per second. I look at it in the simplest as "damage given per second / damage taken per second" with missiles/rockets. Remember, the idea of long range weapon systems is to hit your enemy before they can hit you.
With missiles, I get just within range and then choose "keep at distance" with the distance default just inside my missile range. So long as I can keep pace (or even if I can just delay how long it takes them to close in) I can deal lots of damage before they can even get within firing range. So in that case, missiles are far greater than rockets. Plus against lots of weak ships, the first missile can take out the ship in one shot whereas it will take multiple rockets and thus more time to destroy each ship.

Edited by: Guardian Alpha on 20/10/2005 22:19:02 It isn't a matter of worse or better, when comparing rockets and missiles. It's a matter of using the appropriate tool for the current tactic/situation.
Rockets have less range but do more damage over time (DoT) Missiles have longer range but do less damage over time.
Foxfire rocket does 25 damage every 4 seconds. Flameburst light missiles does 75 damage every 15 seconds.
A rocket launcher can launch 3.75 rockets in the time it takes one missile to launch.
Rocket damage in 15 seconds = 3.75 x 25 = 93.75 damage Missile damage in 15 seconds = 75 damage
We can even approach this a different way:
Rocket launcher fires every 4 seconds, meaning 15 launches in a 60 second time period. Missile launcher fires every 15 seconds, meaning 4 launches in a 60 second time period
Rockets: 25 damage x 15 launches = 375 damage per minute, or 6.25 damage a second Missiles: 75 damage x 4 launches = 300 damage per minute, or 5 damage a second
----------- Rockets hit harder than missiles with DoT and DpS (damage per second) but have less flexability and range. Missiles do not hit as hard as rockets but have more versatility and range.
Adjust per your tactics. ------------
