Edited by: Mar Sera on 23/10/2005 20:14:42 I've seen many forum threads about ships being stolen when two parties decide to trade their ships while in space, but seeing today's article on the theft of an Imperial-issue Armageddon has brought the following question to mind: Why are people so willing to trade ships with strangers when they are outside a station?
Isn't "Don't trust anyone" one of the first things we learn as newbies? And there's the in-station trading system, where you can see the whole deal before accepting it. Is it really that hard to use? Hell, most stations sell shuttles, so you can hop into one of those to be able to put the ship you're trading on the table. If the other party isn't willing to buy a shuttle to make the deal, then they aren't trustworthy. Sure, if you're being ransomed, the pirate might not want to dock (sentries), but this is meant more for legitimate deals.

Dude, this was a storyline thing. Not an actual theft, nobody would be stupid enough to trade a ship outside of a station.

Heh, why don't you ask Icarus Starkiller just how storyline it was.

I sometimes wonder if people who are dumb enough to do these things don't deserve them? I mean comeon, are you insane? Trading faction ships in open space when you can do it in much safer ways...

I don't see how anyone could possibly believe that this wasn't arranged in advance. I bet Icarus had a generous offer to help orchestrate this little show to help promote the Legend of Istvaan.
I mean, really - pod ejecting from an Impoc?

For what my word's worth, it wasn't pre-arranged. The swap was, yes; our presence however was a complete surprise to all parties involved ;)

*laughs* It was not 'storyline', it was RP. Did I expect some sort of thievery? Hel yes. Was I upset? Annoyed at most for not having a backup pilot on standby, but little more. That's what I get for trying to be 'honorable' and all that crap. One should always remember, there are no trustworthy people in EVE, no honour, only greed, corruption, and all that society deems Evil.
Remember, I paid 1 mil for that Imperial, so the Nightmare I got in trade was ok. Perhaps I should have pushed the issue a little harder before proceeding with the trade, but I knew what would happen at the outset. I merely failed to prepare for it at all.

Except Hamish, of course. I actually did expect to see you there for the piracy, though.

edit: I did however write a short little story.
Isty, how many times do I have to say it?
I do not use live crew. There were no crewmen for your agent to capture, only automated robotic systems. I've stated this ad nauseum since day one of EVE, I know I had a long conversation with Hamish about the merits of robotics over living crew.

No wonder your performance record is so bad if you refuse to use live crew. The Imperial Apocalypse shouldn't be soiled with robotics and machinery doing what trained officers and slaves should be doing. ---

Asd a matter of efficiency robotic systems are far superior to flesh & blood systems that experience fatigue and require turnover to maintain their optimal performance levels. The sole advantage humans have over automated systems is their ability to improvise on the fly, execute efficiency spikes far superior to robotics, but also suffer efficiency falloff worse than an Amarr laser.
Also, I value life far more than I value hardware - the loss of a ship full of robotic systems is a mere inconvenienc and financial loss, not the waste of life. Yes, crew have escape systems available, but the cost of pod interfaces for thousands of crew is far more prohibitive than retrofitting for robotic systems, and even escape systems are subject to destruction after the loss of the ship itself.
Obviously the Hand have no concern for life or honour, but I have other views.
