So, I had all this money, thanks to my new catering business being so awesome. Then I went on a shopping spree and blew a large percentage of it on stuff. I'm really broke now. I'm trying to save up for some nice ships so I can fly around and feel all space-captainy (that's a word) but I think my goal might be a little far away at present.
I've been hearing about other pilots having slave crews. I didn't know people did that. I think it's a bit immoral using slave crews, because it's taking the job away from someone more qualified which is a bit low given how many people are clamouring for crew positions, especially on lovely safe peaceful ships like mine that never get blown up, ever. Also, can you really trust someone who is not being paid and therefore has less vested interest in doing a good job? However, it's certainly got to be cheaper than paying somebody and I'm really pinched right now. Could the added profit mitigate the risk factors and the blow to my reputation as a pilot who lets smelly slaves on board my nice clean ships?
Oh and anyone who doesn't approve of slaves feel free to send me some ISK so I don't feel financially compelled to consider options like this. Think of it as fighting slavery, because you are - the extra ISK creates less demand for slaves (from me, anyway) and as any first year marketing student will tell you, less demand ultimately means less supply. Thanks for your input and donations. |

Are you a Holder or are you working under the auspice of one?
If not, then no, you should not have slaves as crew.
While in the Kingdom and associated areas, I've used slaves and indentured servants as crew members. I have no had problems with poor hygiene, lack of skill, or poor work ethic. Render unto Khanid the things which are Khanid's; and unto God the things that are God's. |

If you're going to wash, clothe and train them properly, you might as well just stop beating around the bush and give them a wage so they can organise all that crap themselves, saving you the bother. |

A slave workforce is just financially and performance-wise inefficient. It leaves too much to be desired in the capacity for autonomy both under regular workplace environments and emergency situations where oversight has gotten a 1400mm breacher through it. It pretty much ensures that you'll be losing several business opportunities as many can afford to wait for a non-slaver egger to deal with instead.
A highly trained crew won't cost you more in wages, but will be far more capable of adapting to the situation and won't require an entire staff's worth of housing, feeding and security organization while shore-bound. Nor will they prevent you from having dealings with anyone from the most liberal of feddies and minnies, through the worst levels of blooder or empire officials.
If you can afford a frigate to fly, it'll take less than an hour to earn enough to pay a fleet's worth of wages. Captain Lieutenant Midshipman Ms Lady Dame Dudette Otsito the Third. Yeah I was kind of thinking that would be the case actually.
My Dad owns slaves and I'm always like "you should really free some of them, you know" and he's always "don't be getting all Minmatar on me or you're disowned", and then I'm always like "that's not what I mean Dad, slaves are just such a hassle to look after, why don't you just hire a maid, they cook better and it'll probably cost you less in upkeep". But he's all "it's a symbol of Amarr righteousness to own slaves" so there's no talking to him about it, really.
I hope you don't mind if I quote you in future family arguments. |

Using of slaves is prohibited by State law. This means I can't even buy or sell them. And of course I can't fight against slavery, because it would be damaging of someone's property.
As for regarding my opinion about slaves: I wouldn't trust them as well. |

Remember that you can always fight against slavery by giving me ISK. That's an effective way to fight against slavery that doesn't damage any property at all, unless you count the docking bay walls I crash into with the nice new ship I buy. |

I've seen misers before, but DAMN. A full magazine of ammo for your frigate will more than pay for the wages of the crew of a battleship, so trying to determine which type of crew is cheaper is splitting hairs.
I advise you to hire yourself an executive officer. A good XO will handle all of this for you and will make sure you get the best crew available as well as handle the management of said crew. |

I've never bought ammunition in my life. It's really that expensive? Wow. Thank god for lasers - literally. No wonder the minnies can barely afford to rivet together two sheets of corrugated iron, it's all that money they're spending on ammo...

I suppose if I was going to get slaves I could use a slave-wrangler. I don't want to watch them all eat and sleep and have showers and stuff. |

I would do it, if you were State citizens and was obliged to fight against slavery only within State borders. That way I would support upholding the law. But since you are Empire citizen (am I correct?) then supporting you would mean violation of your Empire law. And I am so not doing it. |

As a Holder and businessman, often been asked about my particular view of "savery" within the Empire. I feel that the first thing I wish to clarify is that the term slave is not, in my opinion, truly representive of the state of affairs within an Amarrian Holders household. The term that I was raised using was infact reclaimed. We Amarrians have been charged with the Holy task of reclaiming the Sheppards flock. We are the avatars He uses to help the less enlightened peoples of New Eden return to Him and be Reclaimed.
Unfortunately many have taken this task and twisted it to their personal benefit, often ignoring the safety and well being of those with whom they have been entrusted. Holders have a responsibility to educate and teach the "slaves" under them in the ways of God. One of the best ways to purify the mind, is through physically demanding tasks and jobs that require significant amounts of mental focus. Hardening the body and focusing the mind ultimately frees the soul to hear the Truth.
I myself currently hold several tens of thousands of persons in various stages of reclamation, all of whom are clothed, fed, housed, educated and employed by me, my organisation and those whom have sworn loyalty to my house. In a few rare occasions I have gone so far as to offer the gift of immortality to patricularly enlightened individuals of non-Amarrian decent.
When I come across a forum or communique that calls for the "freedom" of "slaves" I always shake my head. That is the entire purpose of Reclaiming, to free all peoples form the sin of the world, and help them climb the steps in order to stand beside the Amarrian people as equals. Until that time, we Amarrian Holders will be there to act as sheppards for the unwashed flock. Your calls for slave freedom are tantamount to promoting eternal damnation.
Shame. |

You, my dear, are quickly beginning to sound like a sadist. While physical and corporal punishment are used, taking personal pleasure from those acts are an indication of depravity. No, he's Minmatar, and yes they're all like that. The wake up, beat their wives, eat a box of hate, throw axes at things, spend five hours polishing their sunglasses, sings songs about stabbing Amarrians, get drunk, throw more axes at things, violate their sisters to "preserve the bloodline" and then go out to commit terrorist acts for laughs.

Actually I am Caldari, so I've been raised with a healthy appreciation of high explosives and buzzed haircuts. If you're going to make grossly oversimplified racial generalisations, at least have the forethought to check which raise your target is!
