How about some of the seasoned veterans sharing some combat drone tactics.
I have attempted several battles using scout drones and I want to solo NPC cruisers with a Thorax & wasp's.
How can you tell if a drone is damaged? Should you recall damaged drones? How do you repair damaged drones? Deployment strategies: just leave drones out and let them attack or hold them back until there are 2 or less NPC's left?
Thanks in advance.

I have been using drones for some time and will let you know what I know, not that I am any kind of expert, but just what I have learned.
1. When you launch your drones, you will get a Drone Window that shows the drones and their structure ammount. This will let you know if your drone is dammaged or not.
2. I don't recall any of my drones at all. The Heavies can take a lot of damage and still punch out a lot of damage to the target.
3. What I have been doing to repair my drones is basically, dock at a station. Put all the Drones in the hangar. Hit the Repair service. Then in the upper left hand corner of the window is a button that says "Pick Item". It will bring up a list of the items in your hangar. Just select the drones and it will come up with the repair window. (*note: Presently ther is a bug in the repair of drones and once you repair the unit, REPACKAGE it to "Seal" the repairs. If you don't, the game will repair the drone, but when you launch it, it will be damaged back to where it was)
4. I have played both ways and lately I have been waiting until the NPC Pirates get close enough to launch the drones. It seems that the NPC are now attacking the Drones first. But can't say for sure. I do know that my drones are more damaged than before. But you just have to play it by ear.
As for the drones themselves, I use a combo of Praetors for EM Damage, Berserkers for Explosive Damage, Orge's for Thermal Damage, the Wasps for the Kenitic Damage.
I usually carry 2 Praetors for EM, 1 Wasp, 1 Orge, then to round out the 1200 Drone space, take a couple of Hammer Heads or Warriors. This is on a Vexor, and with a Thorax, you will able to load more heavies than I.
Hope this helps....

And your honest opinion private... you find them ok for combat? not to cumbersome expensive? just curious as im waiting on drone lvl 5 so i can move to the heavies just not sure what to expect as i can still manage NPC cruisers no problem without them in a thorax.

I use heavy drones all the time. To be quite frank the biggest danger is getting lazy. You can make so many mistakes against npc cruisers and get away with it (when using heavy drones) that it's frightening. It's worth training heavy drones up to 4 for the +20% damage but I don't think I'd have the patience to train them to 5.
No way would I ever give up drones - 8 heavies and Heavy Drones level 4 is like having an extra gun that hits for 100 every 2 seconds and doesn't miss at any range.

Not really. If you just take your time and don't forget them when you warp off. Done that many times
But I have been using the "Select All" in the Drone Bay and the Drone Window. This speeds things up a lot when you are using 6-8 drones.
Normally what I will do is open my drone bay and right click on a blank spot. Hit "Select All" and then all the drones will be highlighted. Then right click on one of the drones and hit the "Launch".
Once they are all deployed, and I want them to do something, like attack or scoop in the drone bay, I will right click one of the drones (this one is different than the Drone Bay window) and hit "Select All" again at the bottom of the menu. Once all are selected, Target a Pirate, and hit the "Attack". Off they go and withing 5 or 6 shots the Pirate is gone.
And then pop them back in the drone bay with the "Scoop into Drone Bay" and back they go all at once.
The Select All is really nice and speeds things up for using drones.
Hope this helps....

Edited by: agrizla on 05/08/2003 01:43:42 Edited by: agrizla on 05/08/2003 01:42:19 You don't have to do that. Deploy the drones once you have a target locked and selected. Once they are out then fire at the target with a "new" gun (you can already be firing at it with another). The drones will fly off and attack that target. Once it's destroyed use another gun on the next target to "lead" them on. The only time you ever have to use "select all" (apart from scooping them back) is when one of them gets hit by an npc before you "designate" the target by firing a new gun at it as it will trigger an attack (primarily by drones of the same type but the rest will join in after a bit).
Try it. You should find it makes them much more effective All you need to do is have a medium laser (which is useful for short range anyway) and use that to "guide" them. Works for me....
