Hello all
I've been playing EVE for several months now, and I think its a fantastic alternative universe: it is 'star wars' and 'Úlite' and 'risk' and 'star trek' all in one. Finding EVE has been a dream come true for me.
However I think it can still be more. As a mature player I'm very interested in the politics that EVE makes available to the players. Unlike some games with static nonsense background plots (naming no names, Blizzard) EVE has the opportunity for players to forge alliances and carve out realms for themselves in a single shared universe. Fantastic, and as far as I know, unique.
But I don't think the game is making full use of this great feature. As an inhabitant of the EVE universe, my awareness of the universe events is limited. I read the news events regularly when logging in, however these are not as good as they could be. First, they are cryptic. Real-life media tries to explain complex events and their implications so that the man in the street can follow them. EVE's event reporting is often vague, omitting crucial details; perhaps because these 'news' items are more game hints then actual post-event reporting?
Second, the news event rarely report shifts in player politics, which is the really interesting and unique aspect to EVE. When the Gallente Navy had dreadnoughts stolen as the precursor to an in-game event, it was widely reported. However when a player corp. loses a pair of dreadnoughts in an epic battle, it goes unreported! I'd love somehow for EVE to have some mechanism to make such information part of daily play.
I'd love to see some real-life reporting of the changes to the game's politics, and of player driven events. How about this as a starting point for discussion:
EVE could have an in-game page which reflects the day's news stories. It need only have headlines. It could automatically report the following:
- War Declaration Reports Declaring war is serious stuff. Lets see it reported.
- Major Battle Reports A simple headline, perhaps delayed one day, reporting when warring corps have had a significant engagement, and list numbers / ships lost and the system.
- Systems Captured and Lost When a corp. takes or loses a system, it could be reported.
- Major Bounty Claimed The capture or death of a notorious pirate warms the hearts of all carebears.
- Declaration of Alliance Again, a big news event surely?.
The page need not be updated frequently. Analysis of some simple server data could generate the page daily during downtime. Links to the previous pages would be great so we could track events.
You may say that much of this information is already available via the extra-game sites, however this isn't the point. I want this information as part of my immersive game experience. I want newsflashes of battles whilst I play, not read about it while at work the next day in my browser
Also, I think the present way news is reported, with real life issues mingled with plot storylines isn't a good idea. Keep them separate, even if just by using a separate font colour. It can be quite hard to follow a plotline when picking through news about SQL hardware etc.
EVE is superb and unparalled, however its only the beginning of what can be done I think. I'd be interested in hearing people's opinions on this.
Thanks for reading

PS - I'm a subscriber to the EON magazine, and its excellent, however I don't think its going to fill this gap in EVE.

Nice idea, and I back this.
It would be gd, as I find it bothersome to read the forums half the time due to 1 line replys in the threads that include the alliance politics, and that in.
Hm, maybe its time for a dedicated player journalist force

I've reposted this in the 'Features and Ideas Discussion' forum as I think its better suited there. Maybe a kindly moderator can step in and move / remove this one?

You know what we really need? "Regional News". As in, a specific news feed (with associated volunteer staff) for each region, so you can follow what's actually going on around you and get involved with local politics. The real "big picture" stuff spanning the entire map is always going to be the preserve of relatively few big, powerful groups, but anyone can get involved regionally and it'd add a lot of interest IMO. WRT for example war decs, if you did it universe-wide people would ignore them for the most part, but if you had the major news story for your region being two big corps or alliances going to war in that region that'd be far more relevant.

Once again an awsome idea which can not go anywhere because;
CCP has no room to hire new programmers/content developers yet, and there are only 11 DEV's to do anything in the game today...

Love it, I think a player news corp would be a good starting place. I don't think that it would take to much to include a place to submit info & screen shots for review and possibly posting.

I'm sure the dev's could take a coffee break to write this
But yeah. Great idea, gets my backing.

The idea I am suggesting is almost trivial to implement (speaking as a professional programmer). An in-game web page summarising the previous days events since last downtime, listing the events mentioned above. The data is all already there, and it needs only to be queried for (deducing when a battle had taken place might be an interesting programming challenge though). A nice touch would be a bot to 'headline-ize' the news.
Although a player news corp etc might be fun, its not what I am suggesting here, as such a corp would be open to interpretation and abuse.

Are you a active member of an alliance solo? Seams not so. When I look at our alliance mail and take it 15 times (rough number of active alliances) all the newsworthy items you named would be spam after 2 weeks.
When you are really interested in player news you have to talk to ppl in charge. We got some kind of player news at eve-i but that's dead. And as i see this the CCP staff is heavyly outnumbered by alliance politics.
But ... it's your chance solo. Go for it! Talk to the right persons and get some facts from players. Make some quality content from it and post it here. Ask the eve-radio ppl for some help. It may even make it to the ingame news.

well being able to filter news items would reduce spam (perhaps accessible via the ingame browser u can access it if u want to but u wouldnt get any evemails - lag would be to much anyway allow it to be accessed by those that want it
but good idea and signed.

Nice idea. And I'm sure it's not all that hard to implement. But it should still go to the back of the things-to-do queue.
About the whole volunteer news thing, it's been tried.. and worked ok for a few weeks but then it just died.
I'm all for having more content in the ingame browser though... and the items solosnake listed were very well chosen.

Edited by: Progeny Soames on 25/10/2005 16:56:39 Maybe, all that is required is a submissions contact for those responsible for publishing the in game news.
Surely, if they were to receive a well written and balanced news report from a player about player activities they would publish it in game.
The problem then however, is one of editing. Imagine the dross (the, 'my alliance is better than yours or my corp killed more than yours' variety), that would need to be filtered in order to get to the good stuff.
Maybe the answer lies with the forums and the so called press releases/news reports and with the moderators making the submissions based on some very tight criteria. They already have degree of control as to what is suitable forum material and what is not, it can't be such a huge leap for a mod to promote or sponsor a piece for in-game publication.
