Having just got my alt into a Covetor I was wondering if anyone had a guess what extra skills a T2 barge may require? As he's a predominantly mining char I want to try an keep ahead of the game this time

probibly refining type skills...
They also mention bringing new skills out to improve mining, so they might need new skills not yet released.

Good point about the new skills. Although I can't see how refining can get better as it is already possible to get 100% refine, unlss they somehow allow refining to produce a maximum refine greater than that currently possible...

They could nerf the current refine situation so that what gives you a 100% refine now won't anymore.
Sorta like when they introduced the new missle skills - you needed to train them to get the old performance.
That's IF they want to release more refine skills for normal ores. It's also possible the new mining skills have nothing at all to do with refining, or that new refining skills would be for refining using something other than the current refining mechanisms.
Really, there are so many possibilities, I suggest that noone get upset over any particular ones yet. Just check the test server occasionally and keep your ears open.
A total shot in the dark on the OP's question, the best way to prepare if you haven't already is have your learning skills high:).

I wouldn't mind a few new skillz that reduce the cycle time of mining lasers. Waiting 3 minutes for a strip miner to cycle can be a bit annoying sometimes... and Ice Harvesters sure can use some luvin 2. It's more fun to watch paint dry than to sit in an ice field. 
I don't see how this type of skill would seem "required" for a t2 barge, but if they add any new mining skillz, this would certainly be a good one to throw into the mix.
But I agree that cranking out the learning skillz is as good a prep as any other...beyond that I would at a minimum make sure Mining, Science, and possibly Starship Command is at 5. It also wouldnt hurt to have Engineering, Navigation, etc. at 5 too. Basically, anything to make you move faster, hold more cargo, increase cpu/grid, and increase capacity, since the t1 barges are lacking in those areas. I'm assuming the t2 will also follow suit. Oh, and if you have all those caught up, you can always polish off drone skillz and/or the industry/ore processing skillz.

Definitely with you on wanting skills to reduce cycle times... I'd imagine it would be a devs preferred option too, seeing it means you don't have to balance it by making sure that the ship's cargo holds are big enough that the lasers don't switch themselves off too often.
And plus, they must realise that anything that they can do to make mining less slow has got to be a good thing...

Well, I've already got the skills for this (whenever it enters the game) and this (ohhh MSMIIs 4tw with any of these (for all ores). Mining drones at V. Drone Interfacing at V. Ice Harvesting & Processing V. I training DCM, even though I don't use them. After that I guess I'll get my lab op to V and Mass Prod to V to join my corp's lab-rat crew (since 30 active labs isn't enough for my CEO).
So what is next? Oh hey can the devs make the Advances Spaceship Command bonus apply to barges? That would be a nice addition if it stacked with Spaceship Command.
I think it will have to be new skills, as the T1 barges already required so many skills to use the large mining barge. Perhaps Advanced mining barge, Advanced Spaceship Command, Advanced Mining Techniques and Advanced Astrogeology could be the "new" skills?
And the idea that refining could be nerfed doesn't apply unless they add new skills there also... I have ore specific refining (even though I only neede lvl 4 to use T2 crystals)and scrapmetal at V.
I am a miner (only a miner... not an agent \/\/|-|0re or a hauler or anything else... though, I will need to expand my skill training soon). Roids fear my approach... and ore thieves will also once I can fire on them w/o getting Concorded (damn neg sec rating proves my desire for this)!
It is a loverly thing to see 10 barges kill a belt in about an hour. And yes, I mine in all sec levels of space.
I'd offer my services as a miner, but I'm already in a mining corp, and I don't like to have quotas as real life sometimes requires my attention.

T2 procurer will need Elite Mining barge skill 1, T2 Retriever and Covetor will need 3 and 5 in this new skill. You'll must have Mining Barge 5 to learne Advanced Mining barge.

i think there are 2 likely, 1 possible and 1 unlikely additions to t2 mining barges
1.) mining yield (probably only 25% more than the top current barge with all skills) 2.) tanking (probably MUCH harder than t1 barges) 3.) increasing dronebay for more defence 4.) adding pinball machine to barge controls so you don't get bored while mining 
now, i haven't mined since my first month. pinball might have made me continue --

Yeah, I've heard that the T2 barge is gonna be kinda like an "Assault Barge". Bit better for low-sec space.

mining mods dont ask me how i got the info and yes the elite mining barges will be much harder to kill and have more cargo space and lower cycle times.

There will be new skills comming for the new barges. They will be called "Advanced mining barges" or something a little more creative... They will follow the same pattren as the current mining barge skill, and might need something extra like electronics and sumsuch a thing to lvl5 just to keep you bussy.
Then there will be the mining group modules, crystal synchronization (improving crystal effectiveness) and a cycle time improvement. There will even be implants fro mining (not sure if there will be one for all slots (6-10) but I am sure they will come in two flavors 3 and 5% increases.
The barges will have HAC like shield/armor resistances and increased shields/armor making them deffenetly harder to kill. You can count on them costing at least as much as a battleship certainly at first. 
Anyway all miners out there can look forward to exciting time ahead... Should you disagree with me, well I guess that is because I disagree with you. If you have a problem with that please by all means feel free not to tell me. |

hmmm... i would like to see race specific barges... like a gallente one with more drone space, amarr one with more armour, faster minmitar one and more shileds on the caldari one... that would in my opinion be very nice... more race specific mining is what i want

I just want access to the t2 ice miners. Since I agree with everyone on the excitement of mining ice. Even with the barge at lvl 5, you still only get the t1's down to a 7.5 minute cycle time.
Besides, if I am going to suck, I want to do it quick and clean.
