Edited by: Rain Crow on 25/10/2005 07:17:06 First, I just want to say that I'm not mad about getting my ship blown up last night or anything like that. It was actually kind of exciting. What I'm wondering about is why did they bother. Why do some people sit out by the gates waiting for other players to come by just so they can blow them up? Do they get money for doing it?
It can't be for the fun of PvP. I was flying an Imicus, with a mining lasor. I didn't even shoot back. Two guys scrambled me so I couldn't warp and then they blew up my ship with a few missiles and pod killed me. Were they just hoping I had something in my cargo hold? Seems like all they did was waste some missiles on pod killing me for no reason. What am I missing here?

In your case (as you are so poor) they did it for fun - theirs :) Maybe they were practising their co op skills and training to be "real" pirates, maybe they were bored ..... there are all sorts of people in this game doing all sorts of things for all sorts of reasons - you have to learn to co exist with them.
Keep out of low sec (.4 and below space) for the time being. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ...One mans rubbish is another mans treasure... |

Many pirates consider gatecamping work. Not fun. Regular belt piracy is incredibly fun and quite a challenge (as your enemies often have far bigger ships than you), but generally you earn crap all--most of your enemies won't have good loot, and people rarely pay ransoms.
Gatecamping is the only chance a pirate has to get industrial ships, which is where the real money comes from. And so every pirate eventually finds themselves doing it when they run out of cash. - Proud member of the [23].

Pirates gate camp to make money. If you had alot of valuable cargo, or had very expensive implants, its a very effective way of making alot of money quickly.
If you were worth alot more, they would have convoed you before they popped your ship and asked for a ransom. if you pay it, they will let you pass (asuming they have some shread of honor). If you dont, then welcome to your afterlife.
There are ways, however to thwart the gate campers, when travelling through low security space, ensure your ship's equipped with WCS( Warp Core Stabilisers) to prevent jamming. Use microwarp drives to hammer through blockades. Use insta warp bookmarks so you can land right on top of the jumpgate (no more warping in at 15km out)...
Convo me in game if you need more help.

And because you now probably wonder why they shot your little imicus if they were after money:
Many players use young alt characters in newbie ships to transport small, very valuable items (such as blueprint originals) and hope they wontnt be caught that way. Pirates often do not equip cargo scanners so they wontnt know if you carry some expensive implants or a BPO in cargo until they shoot you.

You bookmark 15km beyond a gate, in line with your warp from another gate, and if you warp to the bookmark, you'll be on the gate.
9-10km for a warp-to-15km bookmark and 14-15km for a warp-to-20km bookmark are more accurate, I've heard. - Proud member of the [23].

for gate to gate travel you need to be at about 11.5km then you'll come out perfectly
