ok so i know you can set your default keep at range or orbit to the optimal range of your guns. recently i switched to 125mm named rails. they PWN. my i want to click keep at rance or orbit and be done with keeping enemies at distance. well it only lets me set keep at range at 500 max default and 7500 max for orbit. how can i set it to like 10?

"RIGHT" click on the ORBIT box in the overview and highlight 'set default', you should get a box that you can enter the specific range you want.
I have also had trouble doing the same for the 'KEEP AT RANGE" option.

when i try to set the orbit distance to a default i right click->orbit->default-> a list of ranges comes up that max's out at 7500km. is there supposed to be a box where i can type a specific range?

In the top right of your screen is the overview. At the top of this is the 'selected item' box.
Go into a belt with ships.
Select a ship by left clicking it in space.
Look at your 'selected item', it will have a series of buttons.
Once you find the 'keep at distance' and 'orbit' buttons Right click them and choose set default.
This does not reset when you quit so it only has to be done once(assuming you stick to the same weapon/ammo combination)

Select target. Then right click on the "keep at" or "orbit" icons that are in the Selected Target section of the overview. You can set your default ranges there. Also, your default ranges I think are only valid when you use those icons. If you right click on an item in space it will only give you the system default values to choose from, which will probably be different than what you set.

It sounds like you're right clicking on the target, instead of the box in the Overview...

 I find best orbit range for 125mm Railguns is 15k, using Iridium and Tungsten ammo, but the ammo and range is your choice
