I am debating on what ships/guns to work on for rats and pvp and I keep tossing back and forth between amarr, gallente, and minmitar. I am looking for a good mixture of dmg, versatility, and decent tanking.
I like the projectiles and how they are versatile but from what I understand lack sustained dps, and does this hurt a lot in pvp or is the burst usually enough to keep it balanced. Also I am not sure but how well do the minmitar ships tank?
On amarr I like the lasers but not sure on the limited dmg types and tracking. But understand they have good tanking abilities.
On Gallente I like drones and all but it seems some of the ships depend on drones to balance their dps output and in a lot of cases in pvp I wouldnt think drones would be able to get out and to the target before its nearly over. But do like rail guns but also limited dmg types.
I realize I can train all the different ones but at first would like to find one races ships/weapons to focus for the time being.
So essentially whats the different opinions from my above problems.
Thanks ahead of time for any advice.

my advice here would be to get a frigate (or cruiser if u have the cash) of each of races you are interested in fly each and decide what you enjoy most. train those
how powerful they are will all change at some point during your eve career (i'm a raven pilot btw ), so don't base your choices on that
personally, i think i'd go gallente, but its your choice --

i trained for all the weapon types but projectiles, so i'm fairly well rounded. But its knowledge which affects combat a lot more than skillpoints. a tech 2 weapon gives at maximum only about a 10% increase in damage (compared to some named weapons). So play around with everything for a bit, then decide which you like best. (or just train T2 in everything)

Minmatar ships are extremely effective in PvP, atm. Their ability to choose damage types and extreme versatility of setups can utterly own an opponent. As for tanking, minmatar tank surprisingly well; also, some of their ships have the slots to set up either with a shield tank or armor tank. Right now their cruisers have a few issues, mainly with fitting, but the Mk 2 project slated to be released with Red Moon Rising should fix this.
I've flown every race except for Gallente, and I find that I enjoy Minmatar ships the most.

Amarr damage types can be very limiting, but lasers inflict more base damage per second than the other races' weapons, so this counteracts the problem. As for tracking, lasers have the best tracking for long range weapons, and their short range weapons track rather effectively, too.
As you already mentioned, Amarr tank like beasts, but another thing that occasionally gets overlooked is the fact that they don't use up ammo; this can be crucial on operations far from home.

Drones are definitely one of the plusses of flying Gallente, but not every ship relies on them. Also, Gallente ships are often more effective with close-range setups than long range, so drone travel time to target isn't, generally, an issue. The blasterthron is generally acknowledged as one of the most effective short range battleship setups in the game.
Even at long range Gallente tend to be effective; the "sniperthron" variation of the megathron battleship is one of the best snipers in the game. As the megathron gets a tracking bonus, its ability to hit smaller targets is significant.
The dominix battleship deserves a special note, here, as it is probably the most effective solo battleship in the game, atm. -Wrayeth

Minmatar = best volley damage + changing dmg types
Gallente = stuck with Kin + Therm + generally good dps
Amarr = stuck with EM/Therm. Highest dmg off the bat since it has the dmg bonus built in (most amarr ship dont have a dmg bonus) best tracking. No ammo usage.
If your npc hunting I would go for Apoc and lasers...
If your willing to go all the way and want to PVP then Minmatar, although your still the underdog... It requires alot of skilltraining tho...

just out of curiousity with minmitar interceptors and autocannons is it possible to move fast enough to get like 5k-10k away and just orbit and tear them apart. Or would webbers put a real quick end to that.

Edited by: Custo on 27/10/2005 20:45:41 so with decent skills can projectiles be very versatile and based on minmitar ships and different range loadouts be good in pvp an ratting. Cause I like the ability of being able to change ammo for different resists but just making sure after the burst dmg the sustained dmg is still good enough to keep it all rolling for the ship to be more than just a one volley then if you dont destroy them it means your in trouble everytime. What it all boils down to is I dont have the experience to help me decide so I am trying to get input so whatever I start with has a good chance of being what I stick with.

Projectiles do pretty much the same DPS as other guns. The reason for why ppl usually disregard them is: atm most ppl fit alot of damage mods to vastly increase the DPS on each gun. And minmatar ships generally have lower ammounts of turret slots... however, this will (hopefully) change in the future patch. Also, when NPCing you usually want to fit a tank instead, so for NPC setups minmatar gets pretty much the same DPS.
You should also think of where in the eve universe you want to "live". For example, lasers are very bad against angel NPCs (but are very good against sansha/blood). So if you've planned to be hunting angel NPCs you should think twice before picking amarr. Minmatar works good against all NPCs. So does Gallante provided you use a drone based ship. Otherwise you may struggle against some NPCs. Caldari with their missiles can also do good damage against all rats, but shield tanking will struggle alot against sansha/blood.
In general, the races are fairly balanced. But my anser to your question I am looking for a good mixture of dmg, versatility, and decent tanking, would def be either gallante dominix or minmatar tempest when looking at the battleships. Drink up, shoot in. Let the beating begin. Distributor of pain. Your loss becomes my gain...

Maybe you forgettting about projectile autocannons wich can bring massive dps. Maybe Tempest with 6x 800 IIs or Dual 650 IIs that will turn mostly anything to dust with proper setup in close range. -=-

go for typhoon or tempest.. most versitile ship there is around. tyhpoon is the most ( best ) idea t1 bs there is. : large drone bay 4 guns 4 launchers 7 lows for armor tank this ship requires a good well rounded pilot to fly and it should be the 1st bs you get any type of damamge any setup any range..
and is better then most t2 bss for pvp ( 30 mill cheaper ) manchester united's best ever fan!

go for the ship race that appeals to you the most, don't base it on how good one race's ship ingame is compared to another. they all change over the months anyway. the best approach is to choose that one race and then special in it.

I have tried all but minmater, will get around to it someday. I started off with a scorp, then megathron then raven then Apoc.
Ive basically decided to stick with Amarr as i like the close range of Megapulse II but in a way i wish id stayed with Hybrids.
Point is try them and see what suits you best, in the end its only time and if you want to play eve for a long time, soon you will get to try new stuff.
Ill probibly do Minmater at somepoint since the volly damage is insane, but I do feel like i should be specialising so im going to get my engineering skills up to a respectable level while i decide my next plan.
See even old timers have difficulty decideing where to go with their character but its good to have a change.
