Tried to use these to protect myself from rat missles but I keep getting the message the object isn't in range to fire rockets. How are these things suppose to work?

You have to fire them just as the enemy fires his missiles. They're very hard to use properly, and I'd recommend against them. - Proud member of the [23].

I tried to use them myself this evening, I was up against some Ammar navy ships and they were pounding me with missiles, my defenders were rubbish too, I imagine that the only way to use them is when the opponent is at a great range - maybe at least 20K? I decided that I will probabaly replace the turret with another missile, it just seemed a wasted slot.

They used to be handy when the missile speeds were slower all round, but the Cold War (?) patch changed that. They are hard to use properly now.

The only defense to missiles are to just eat them like a girl. Let them hit you hard and use you shield boosters or armour repairers to fix yourself up. That is one of the only way. Alternatively, kill him first before he has the chance to launch again to kill you.

It's a bit of a shame that there is no viable option to defend against missiles, if I want to continue using Frigates (and of course atm I have to) against tough enemies is there no way to counter armour crunching missiles? It appears that missiles leave you with no option to actually use any sneaky tactics; long range or short range you'll get boomed. I'm in a Rifter atm and .5 seems my limit for NPC pirates, is that about right would people say? (being a noob) Sorry for hijacking btw!

You can also try using Area of Effect weapons like Smartbombs. The Micro Smartbombs are easy to train and require little ship resources to use and have an area of effect of around 2000-5000m depending on the module. Any damage type would work. When activated the weapons would destroy all surrounding missiles (type of missile matter too, the larger the missile, the more damage it can take). The neat thing is it would kill all incoming missiles within range. Bad thing is risk of using these types of weapons in Empire secure space incase you accidentally hit an innocent pilot and Concord comes after you!

Knowing absolutely nothing about smart bombs, how do you use them? How do they work?

Smartbombs basically send out a shockwave around your ship that damage anythig within a certain radius (2000m-5000m as stated before). they require the energy emmisions skill I believe. All you do is take a smartbomb and fit it in to a hi slot once you've trained the skill for it, in combat, you then activate it and it sends out a shockwave damaging anything within it's blast area. They are best used when oh say... you have no innocent people or things around that could get damaged by it ending with concord destroying your ship, unless you are in .4 sec or below space that is.
