This always confuses some people, so let's see if we can fend off the confusion before it happens.
In Britain tonight, and I think in most of the USA as well, the clocks are going back an hour for the winter. EVE time is parallel to Icelandic time, which is identical to GMT and does NOT change. So from tomorrow, the downtime, 11-12GMT, will be 11-12 British time as well, instead of 12 till 1. You americans will have to work it out for yourself, but basically any country which turns the clocks back - downtime is an hour earlier now.
Visit http://www.greenwichmeantime.com if you want to look into this further.

Me too.
And this is always a fun time of the year as so many people in the UK don't understand how BST works.

Yup .. I meant to post this earlier to catch all the Brits, but I forgot. Oh well ... maybe, just maybe, ONE of them will read this before he starts the 1257th thread complaining about early downtime.

Wait.... you guys turn your clocks BACK for winter? That's just messed up.
Here in Australia we turn them FORWARD starting now for the summer (well, most states anyway). So the downtime for me now is 10-11pm --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Who is the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?" Obi-Wan Kenobi |

the only good thing about the BST is that when the clocks do go back it means the nightclubs are open for an extra hour since its 2am when they normally shut all of a sudden it flicks back to 1am again.
other than that its a stupid outdated thing we did during one of the world wars to confuse the enemy, nowdays all it does is confuse everyone else

Well, it comes to the same thing. We *did* turn the forward for the summer, which is now over, so they're going back to the "normal" position.

I'm all in favour of scrapping it, and ... Originally by: Bosie

Why not just have school from 8 while 2 in summer, instead of 9 while 3? That's what we effectively ARE doing, we just pretend it's 9am when it's actuall 8am. Pointless. If we want to save daylight, just do things an hour earlier, why waste time and money altering the clocks to convince people?

Daylight savings time was introduced for the named reason because during winter dawn comes an hour later and dusk comes out an hour earlier so to save daylight in olden times before digital clocks electricity etc, this system was made so that the workers had a full days daylight to work in.

I thought it was introduced during the Oil Crisis in 1973, when oil was very expensive and thus we were 'forced' to save energy by changing the time so in summer we'd have an extra hour of daylight, and one hour less electricity consumption.

Edited by: Dak Hakin on 30/10/2005 10:17:27 Daylight Saving Time has been used in the U.S. and in many European countries since World War I. At that time, in an effort to conserve fuel needed to produce electric power, Germany and Austria took time by the forelock, and began saving daylight at 11:00 p.m. on April 30, 1916, by advancing the hands of the clock one hour until the following October. Other countries immediately adopted this 1916 action: Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey, and Tasmania. Nova Scotia and Manitoba adopted it as well, with Britain following suit three weeks later, on May 21, 1916. In 1917, Australia and Newfoundland began saving daylight.
The plan was not formally adopted in the U.S. until 1918. 'An Act to preserve daylight and provide standard time for the United States' was enacted on March 19, 1918. [See law] It both established standard time zones and set summer DST to begin on March 31, 1918. Daylight Saving Time was observed for seven months in 1918 and 1919. After the War ended, the law proved so unpopular (mostly because people rose earlier and went to bed earlier than people do today) that it was repealed in 1919 with a Congressional override of President Wilson's veto. Daylight Saving Time became a local option, and was continued in a few states, such as Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and in some cities, such as New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago.
During World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt instituted year-round Daylight Saving Time, called ôWar Time,ö from February 2, 1942 to September 30, 1945. [See law] From 1945 to 1966, there was no federal law regarding Daylight Saving Time, so states and localities were free to choose whether or not to observe Daylight Saving Time and could choose when it began and ended. This understandably caused confusion, especially for the broadcasting industry, as well as for railways, airlines, and bus companies. Because of the different local customs and laws, radio and TV stations and the transportation companies had to publish new schedules every time a state or town began or ended Daylight Saving Time.
On January 4, 1974, President Nixon signed into law the Emergency Daylight Saving Time Energy Conservation Act of 1973. Then, beginning on January 6, 1974, implementing the Daylight Saving Time Energy Act, clocks were set ahead for a 15-month period through April 27, 1975.

Are you seriously saying people post asking about the downtime moving?
I hate going from BST to GMT, because it results in it getting dark a lot earlier, 4 o clock nightness is bad. Reminds me of the days of walking home in pitch black from school in freezing weather. Thats why i hate winter. All year summer ftw

Anywhere as far north as eg. Scotland is in trouble one way or the other, because there's only six hours' daylight to play with. It's either still dark when you arrive, or it's dark before you leave, or both.

I work part time at my local co-op (which btw, has joined with Ipwich and Norwich Co-op to become EAST of ENGLAND Co-op, as of midnight last night!)
I had heaps of r3t@rds trying to get into the co-op before 9am this morning (9am is opening time)...
'BUT ITS HALF NINE' someone shouted at me when I said that we weren't open.
'NO IT F******* AINT', I shouted back....
Needless to say, he soon realised his mistake and walked off, back to his sad little life where he must have his newspaper as soon as he can in the mornings. He came back at 9 with the rest of the village's older residents who absolutely must have all their papers and their inserts otherwise... I dunno, maybe they drop dead. GRRR: RAGE have I for them. ----------------
