For all the chicken littles out there, the price drop in the US to $20 is a good thing not bad. Most all MMORPG's do it when they recoup the orginal dev cost a little. I was in Beta and always planned on playing Retail but due to sports/summer commitments could not until now. But when I saw the price drop I ran out immediately. Well the EB here in middle of nowhere OKC, Oklahoma had even said they sold 8 copies in the last day. THAT'S GOOD. They were talking about ordering more. And in the newbie channel I was in last night had to be at least 20 or 30 newbies trying to figure stuff out. That is in just that one channel at 11pm CDT US Time. I have a feeling you will have an influx of players from the price drop. Oh and BTW the game looks great. Looks like they have done a lot since Beta. (I heard they screwed the pooch on CTD though in last patch.) I think things are fine if not getting better from what I saw.

I've always said that if an MMORPG wants to be popular, sell the interface for really cheap, or even give it away, then make your money in the monthly bill.

Oh and I forgot. Funny story. I immediatly went to 0.0 space to sight see since I had nothing to lose and wanted to see whats going on. Found an MOO BB and started orbitting to check it out. Well he warned me but I forgot to switch to Local to see and he spanked me to my egg. Later I talked to him and he said he was sorry and gave me 500k for the trouble. But don't tell anyone. They have an evil rep to maintain.

It's a good thing for the game, but the fact is that such a drastic price cut (From $40-50 down to $20) can be described as only one thing: A sign of desperation. Rarely is such a drastic measure sufficient to resurrect a game that has done so badly as to warrant such a price cut. No successful game cuts their price by that much within 4 months of release. Hell, the successful ones (Diablo II anyone?) take YEARS to drop below half of their original price. (D2 was originally $50 I believe, and last I checked was still selling for $25-30, and the game has been out for OVER FIVE YEARS.) ---------------- Blue Screen of Death CEO Exodus Enterprises |

I like the price drop. It means my wife can pick up a copy without feeling like it's a waste of $50 that we could use for going out to dinner.:) Spending $20 is a lot more manageable. It also means that it will be easier to convince more of my friends that they need to try it out too.
All the doom and gloom posts on the price drop don't take into to account that Amazon.com was selling it for $40 from the beginning of retail. Price drop means nothing to whether a game is good to play or not. It makes it more accessible to more people. I'm excited. See you all ingame with a bunch of newbs. :)

Edited by: Rembo on 05/08/2003 19:51:10 True. It may be a sign of a little desperatioin but I don't see how that could do anything but possibly help in the long run. Hopefully by now they have recovered most of the dev cost. And the business model of most MMORPGS is designed to profit of the sustained subs and this would bump those. You might take a hit up front on sale price but in the long run if even half of those people stay it may help out the bottom line.
Maybe they decided to do this instead of a big ad expense. Cause heaven knows I have not see but probably two ads total for Eve EVER in the game mags. Or on the game sites or anywhere for that matter. Dudes in the ad dept must be pocketing the case that or had no budget to start with...

I didn't think that game was allowed to be mentioned around here. My god I hated that game... I was BETA up till the end and saw that train wreck comin. Off topic but I had to chimed in...
Seriously was this comment meant to be sarcastic saying EVE was going the way of ENB? Just curious

People say EVE was stupid with no adds. E&E had a ton. 4 months in. EVE and E&B had same nubmer of peak players.
4 months in, E&B you could get a 7 day demo FREE.
4 months in, EVE... they FINALLY drop the price. for a MMORPG, that's not a short time.
This article is 15 days old.
http://evevault.ign.com/articles/428/428711p1.html
That talks about EVE's plans. (some longterm, some short term)
It also, says somethign that shows investors still invest HIGHLY in EVE.
EVE will never die as long as investers invest.
I am NOT going to quit. You can. but when you come crawling back when EVE is the best, I will be in a ship you will NEVER rival. :) -rei

Frankly I think they should allow you to download the entire game and purchase the key online. That will be a much better way to assure the future of the game.

Love EVE, here to stay.
I hope that you are right, that the price cut will allow the game to become more popular.
Unfortunately, i'm engaging a project that will keep me from playing as much as I play now, and I'm already feeling the side effects...
