Edited by: Xerxes X on 01/11/2005 15:11:49 The problem with this is that some people will afk mine in a large industrial. Setting it up for mining in a belt, switch on its single mining laser, and then do the hoovering for half-an-hour (the house-wife analogy as used by CCP).
Would not the 3-character test fail under these conditions?
[Ah, been mentioned before, but I like the hoovering analogy :) ]

i've done that, as low as 0.6 iteron mk3 + 2 energized nanos + small armor rep 2 + miner 2 + all cap rechargers in the mids wasn't hoovering, but it was afk mining while I went to the store, picked up dinner, came back, and cooked it
*edit, I can't spell*

I<3u, oh wait it doesn't work on here :) Now I am all for the GMs doing their job and having working in customer service before I know its a thankless job. So thank you to the GMs (and Eris) for trying to stamp out the macro miners...I wish there was a way to declare war on specific people (i.e. known macrominer only) so we can blowed them to bits

I hope that wasn't the only test you were given. They ought to ask random questions that only a human could answer correctly, such as "What year/month is this?", "What is the name of your ship?", "What is your character's name?", "What skill are you currently training?" etc.
imagine they do so when you open private messages to them they spam three random keys XD

I would think that the 3 character test would be combined with first checking to see if the ship is moving around. I.e. a ship which is just sat in the belt mining one roid and doing nothing else wouldn't warrant the 3 character test, but a ship which mines until its cargo is full, flies back to station, drops off ore, comes back, and mines again for 15 hours straight would be given the 3 character test to see if it's a player or a macro flying it back to the station.

An anti-macro system has yet to be invented that can prevent a skilled programmer from circumventing it. You know it doesn't even have to be software? In the extreme case, it can be entirely abstracted to hardware, making it undetectable by any possible software system.
The only way to remove macroing is to make it more effective not to macro. So far, games have had little success with that.

I'm envisioning the "Macro Mouse", it would look like one of those "USB key" memory sticks. You would plug it into your USB or PS/2 port, it gets recognized as a mouse, and it controls the cursor according to preprogrammed rules.

The only way to eliminate any macro miner program would be to make mining more interactive. Adding a mini game (logical or otherwise) to mining would work. Hey, you could even increase your yield based on your performance
I know it will never happen, but a miner can dream, can't he.

Don't worry this is a bug caused by the remote administration tool. I get this bug when I use TightVNC too. It seems, when the application got focus, the UI got a "click button" command, defaulted to the people and places or any other search window.
I don't think this is caused by some GM (Or i'm totally screwed up, cause I always dismissed this window, thinking of this bug). _______________________ Forums DSU |

I don't want to tell CCP how to run their game BUT The way I test for macro-miners, and I've found this very effective, is to pull my iteronmk4 and iteronmk5(2nd account) up to the suspects can, and empty it, rinse and repeat.....
...And no I don't return the ore

Originally by: Lord WarATron I was planning on training up impels with the intention of setting that Impel with 7 expanders loose on those Ultra Big Veld rocks while I sleep. Any official word on this?
Would I be correct in assuming that a ship with no turret slots (like an Impel) cannot mount a mining laser, or any gun for that matter?

Imho you guys should not talk about this stuff. Let it come completely from the dark to the people who are really macroing. Don't give them any hints on what (sort of testing) to expect.
If it was for me, I would remove this thread now.

If you don't petition first, and they do turn out to be macro miners, you will be banned too. ______________________________________________

I don't think that's very feasible, unless there's a measurable way to tell if you, the player, actually knows that the person you're taking ore from is macroing. Are you really going to petition the GMs with a macro report and then take the ore, or are you going to pretend you're an ore thief and just take take take? Not if you're an ore thief mate!
Ore thieves get away with murder and they don't get banned. They take without asking, and don't have to bother with any of the "are you using a macro" etiquette.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't know of an ore thief that has got banned for stealing ore. Does anyone have a concrete example of someone getting banned for stealing ore, and not just "I heard that..."?
IMO, if you want to steal ore, you don't worry about something as trivial (to you) as how the ore was obtained by the person you're nicking it from. Macroing, afk mining, (add more here)... to the ore thief, if they get away with it then it's more ISK for them. |

If I was mining and a GM decided to harass me, which is what I would consider this, I<3u isn't the first response that would pop into my head.
Have them say something intelligible or snuggle up next to me in a nifty keen new ship I can look at if that want to "poke" me. Instead of offering an insultuing "pavlovs dogs" test offer something to relieve the utter boredom of mining.
Also, what happens if we don't respond, penalty marks, suspensions, bans? This would be the first MMRPG that offered penalties and bans for taking a dump or answering the phone.
I see endless threads about major bot operations that go on week after week with no apparent response from CCP but I can sleep soundly knowing the GM's are on the ball randomly harassing regular miners with a ridiculous test.
Very customer friendly...

Of course, you could just let macro miners run wild, and have the price of your ore fall through the floor.

I am not proud of this, but I let the game get to me. I bought a macro program and set it up. Took me a while to figure out how it worked but once it did I was able to watch my ship mine until cargo hold was full, warp back to station unload and repeat.
I didn't feel I was doing anything bad, even though I knew it was against the rules. For some reason I figured the rules didnt apply to me, or that I wouldnt get caught.
Well I did get caught. One the first night of macro mining. Hello 2 week ban. I was in withdrawl. Two weeks without EVE gave me some time to think.
At first I was angry and vowed to cancel my account blah blah blah but then I had time to reflect. I stepped back and realised that this is only a game, and why did I have to try and abuse it?
I dont have the macro anymore. I have returned to honest mining, and I am very grateful that my whole account wasn't perma-banned. I learned my lesson and dont macro anymore.
The point of note though is I was caught the first time using it.
