Yes they do but the chance of them doing it varies.
As to your second question you don't really expect anyone to tell you that do you? You probably don't know so I'll explain - the loot tables got nerfed so unless you are after money then there is little point in going after 50k pirates when 20/30k ones drop the loot you are after. There are definitely times you have to go after the 50k ones but in general npc fighting is a bit like mining now - the faster you can do it the better.
Personally I think the loot tables could use a lot of work as in general you get much the same loot yield (in ISK terms) from 20/30k npcs as you do from 50k npcs. Doesn't seem right really, but then again a lot of things in this game don't seem right if you think about them

Pirates tend to use web scramblers and webifiers from systems with a security status from 0.3 to below. This does not mean that all the pirates you meet in such systems will have them, just that the feasible possibility of encountering one starts from that system security level. _______________________________________________ "Is it me or the bad guys just getting totally pathetic?"---Clover, Totally Spies, "Hope is wasted on the Hopeless."---Mandy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Edited by: Quiz on 06/08/2003 11:48:29 Also, they can only warp scramble within 20 km. If you get scrambled and feel you want to leave, just get out of range and wait for the scramble time to wear out, then warp.
They can web you within 10 km so never get that close unless you are sure you can kill them all.
Easiest way to kill npc is from a distance in my opinion. No risk at all.
And, there is a reason to go after spawns with 50k pirates. Bounty. Im at a location that has 120k - 160k spawns. If I start a wave, i can fight them for a couple of hours until im almost out of ammo. By that time I have several millions extra in my account. And lots of cans to look through. :-)

Question,
Is there a certain way to start waves of pirates. Sometimes I hvae spent a couple of hours blast pirate after pirate in one belt whilst in others I am continually jumping to the next belt killing a couple then jumping again.

Yes there is. In general, if you leave the last pirate alive, another group similar to the ones you killed wil appears. Its wise to deplete the last one to near death, and when the others show up you just finnish it off. The time it takes till the others appear varies a bit but once the chain starts, there you go. Then the problem may become stoping them, if you dont kill fast enough.

yep... I call it an "endless rat spawn". Just like the last poster said... just leave the last rat alive and his buddies will show up to help him.
If you kill them to fast you can "break" the spawn. This is actually a good thng when ammo is running low and you want to go collect your loot.
Be careful doing this for long periods of time and keep an eye on who is in the system. If you get jumped by a player pirate while doing this it can go bad for you.

Ahh that makes sense the time I had a really long spawn was when I had one pirate that just sat still out of range. I never got to him because more kept spawning in between me and him.
