I've recently had a storyline mission that was way too hard for me to complete, even with help form a couple of people from my corp. One missile cruiser and 4 missile frigs was far too much for us in 2 rifters and a destroyer, ended up warping out on a quarter structure after not many seconds.
Is there any way to check how hard these missions will be prior to accepting them? I've checked the agent info, but it doesn't give a level for the storyline agents. Also, can you refuse storyline missions without losing standing (as you can for normal missions)?
Thanks for any help.

A storyline mission should be the same level as the agent you did the missions for.
You can just let the missions expire in your journal without accepting it (takes a week or so)

I did the lvl 3 Angel Strike missions (1 allll the way to 10) in an Enyo, so they aren't all that hard.
The best way to do it is to safe spot, eject your ship, then warp into the gate and check out the NPCs.

Ah, so doing missions for a L3 production agent (mostly courier) means that I've got no chance with storylines with my lack of combat skills at the moment. Will just have to ignore the storylines until I get my skills up.

ignoring the storylines would be a mistake if you intend to be an agent runner, only some are hard, most are far too easy.
The faction standing gained from storyline's opens up agents from other corps and you will regret not doing storylines.

The storyline mission to kill the modified megathron is a nightmare. Advise to take at least 2 friends in with you in close range bs. As you are warped scrambled straight away. Then pounded by 6 cruisers and 3 battleships.

That would be a bad idea, as you'd end up loosing standing if you let the mission offer expire. But you can safely decline a storyline mission without loosing standing.

As a combat pilot I've been finding that storyline missions (up to L3) are ridiculously easy for what you get from them. I mean, I don't want to be completely screwed over by them, but a 20k cruiser and half a dozen rookie frigs for a 12% standing boost? Where's the fun in that?

You only loose standig if you accept a mission and don't complete it. You will not loose standing if you let the offer expire without ever accepting it. And you can always decline a storyline mission without standing loss

Correct. You don't lose standing if you let the mission expire without having accepted it.

That a level 3 or 4 mission? I'd hope it wasn't a level 3 one. Yikes.

The place where the storylines are annoying is that if you run some lvl3 and some lvl4 agents and don't know which one touched off a given storyline because you were completing missions for both agents in a similar timeframe.
That said, if you're a courier and you get assigned a combat storyline, it is well worth it to hire someone to run it for you for the standing boost. Indeed you might find someone to make an arrangement with similar to one I have:
I run combat missions, someone in my corp only runs couriers when doing missions but has a sweet Iter V setup for a cargo capacity I can only dream of with my Bestower. She does a fair amount of hauling for me, I run her important combat missions. Indeed we're both going into R&D lotto and since for Amarr those agents tend to be mixed we're picking an agent and splitting the missions combat/courier so we can each do what we do best without having to do refuses despite the lack of a dedicated combat agent for me.
All that said, the only way I know to check difficulty is check with friends or on one of the Missions channels ingame.

I did exactly that with a non-story line mission about 3 days ago and I lost standing with his corp. It's different for storyline agents or you just don't loose faction?
