Server is crowded, Gates are camped...not to mention all the hardware problems keeping us all on the same server---> Time to open up a new universe on a different server and allow half of us to carry our characters over! I am sure CCP has well enough funds to do this....

your kidding? One of the prime selling points of Eve is its unsharded nature of the server.
And you obviously don't have a grasp of how much time and effort this would take, time that could be spent on bugs/optimisation/new cool things/etc.
If you have a problem with lag then move away from the hubs. ------- Bringer of Squirrelly Wrath - Foaminian Card Cult

eve holds the world record for most players on a server, u think they're gonna destroy their own chance of beating it because of you? ahaha

to true. eves uniquness comes from the fact that everyone is on one server. pvpers, indys, traders, mission runners. its grown a diverse political system and market. to put this on shards would destroy it all and it would no longer be the eve any of us know and love. eve is much more than just a game, its a society. to split it would kill it. the depth is what makes it. it what makes it stand out, and makes it so good. we have to take the rough with the smooth

Have you considered the possibility that no one else has so many players on a single server because they consider it impractical and liable to lead to complex loading problems and lag ? That claiming you have 17k players on a system may be like saying you have managed to fit 12 people into your Mini ?

Another server? NO! There are plenty of systems lying empty at this moment.
So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak. |

May be I have understood how Eve works wrongly. But from my POV, it is a solar system to a server and sometimes several low populated systems on the same server. So, in other words the "single server" notation is actually the single universe notation but in reality it is not. The reason for lags are basically hardware and software limitations on the nodes that reside on those servers.
As far as the software sees it, we are actually sharded according to which solar systems we are in so you may actually have 4 people in the Mini. But how big/heavy those 4 ppl are inside the Mini may cause the mini to run slowly, hence lag. Same as the nodes, too many ppl and unnecessary services in each node can cause the server within servers to slow down and hence goes ka-bloooey and then you may have the domino effect. "Eve server" goes pop. ----------------

Think you'll find that there are more than one system per server node depending on the expected total activity across the solar systems and core systems like oursulaert and jita or the 0.0 choke points may have their own server. Unfortunately i suspect the only approach currently open aside from putting on faster hardware is reducing the facilities in the systems to make them all of equal importance and spread the agents out more which would be a bad idea game play wise

Yep, you are indeed right. CCP may need to optimise more of their codes, and redistributed agents so they dont clog up in one system alone. Besides, they may need to trash out some space junks like abandoned cans, etc. and also remove/limit BMs and at the same time do something about production (I do not know much about production but anything that requires some process to look at them) that may contribute to lag. In other words, it is not only the hardware but as well as the software and in-game mechanics that can cause the lag. ----------------

I might be wrong. But I remember reading somewhere that the reason EVE exists at all is that CCP is a networking specialist and developed EVE as a workout for their new massivly multiuser server tech...
in short we are paying them to develop the next gen of game servers....
and the term sharding only refers to where you have multiple copies of the same realm or area. as there is only one instance of each system in the EVE server it isn't sharded.

CCP doesn't even run their own servers so i don't think they are networking specialists, as far as i knew the running of the servers is contracted to company in London but i could be wrong, with the lag, well they are making changes to reduce it, think about it, only a year ago the average amount of players online most of the time was half what it is now, it is understandable that it is going through growing pains, they are about to make the changes to drones to reduce the amount of items the server has to track so that will reduce lag some, they just bought some nice new hardware to help performance, but stuff like this doesn't happen overnight, so give them some credit for designing and helping to run along with the contracted ISP the worlds largest game server cluster, i think that is a feat in itself and the fact that in the last few months they have got a lot better on the response times for server crashes and petitions, i do think they are having some problems with load balancing though, for the last few days our alliances patch of 0.0 has been pretty laggy even though it's one of the quietest regions about...
Good work CCP, keep it up and no we don't want you investing any time coding a new server, just keep your work on this one going :D ----------------------------------------------- "Acta non Verba"
