"Never, never again" was Andreal Pakten's mantra whenever asked about his experience in the State.
He had never wanted to go the first time. When offered to lead the joint Native Freshfood - Echelon research project he had said "no way in Hell" to his boss; "no way" to his boss' boss; and "no way, sir, no way" to Marketing Manager Alranhild Latbrika himself.
With his soft Krusual manners Latbrika had hinted with firing him and making sure he never had another opportunity inside the Native Freshfood network would he refuse, the equivalent of no job at all in the Republic for a flavor engineer. Andreal had clenched his teeth: a team leader position in the State with expat bonuses versus engrossing the two-digits unemployment figures in the Republic was no choice at all, no matter how unpleasant life if the State was for a Matari.
He moved with his wife to Echelon's Passari VI station, managed to overdeliver his best-case scenario goals by a huge 2,7%, and hastened back with a promotion to the Native HQ in Gelfiven the very same day his team finished the project.
After returning, he swore to himself, to his wife and friends never to go back. "For business, Heaven. The fu.cking Land of Getting Things Done man, the Paradise of efficiency. But a Hell for living, a frozen Hell. You cannot tell if you are speaking to people or drones, and I bet a Sebiestor can make more friends in the Amarrian Court than in a Caldari office. I hated it every day man, every single fu.cking day. Never, I'm never again going back there."
He knew deep down in his guts he was going to break his word for the fourth time since he got his Wolf at the Voluval when Latbrika called him to his office that day. "Nice seeing you again Andreal," said Latbrika in the unexpressive matter-of-fact intonation Krusuals seem to like when they know you know they control the situation. "How the Hell are you?"
"I just don't remember anything after that, baby" a shadow who may have once been Andreal later told his horrified wife, after giving her the news they were packing and going back to Passari. "I must have said yes because here is the contract with my signature... but I just can't remember anything. Only a blank, and feeling cold as Hell."
