Sniper rules (The elusive snipe!)
Now you have your item listed, your points listed, you have set a start and end time, you have your reserve, and your buyout information listed, now you need to decide some details about last-minute bids.
Sniper rules are confusing to most people, for the simple reason that they don't understand them, and there are two ways of looking at the rule. Again, be specific. Cover yourself in the event of a last-minute bid war. If you don't, I guarantee you'll hear complaints.
Why is this something to worry about? Well, consider the above auction for the major war gaunts ends at 7:03pm sunday night board time. Now, let's look at what might happen.
Bidder A has the high bid at 6:49pm, of 8000 plats.
Bidder B bids at 6:51pm, 8100
Bidder C bids at 6:58pm, 8200
Bidder D bids at 6:59pm, 8300
Bidder A bids again at 7:01pm, 8350
Bidder B bids again at 7:01pm, 8400
Bidder E, who has never bid on these the whole 2 days it was posted, bids at 7:02pm, 8400
Bidder C bids at 7:03pm, 8500
Now, several issues arise:
First, you had a lot of people interested sill, and it looks like it would have kept going. I have seen auctions "snipe" for an hour.
Second, did Bidder E win, or did Bidder C win? Do bids posted the minute of the end-time count, or not? You didn't specify that, so you will get two very vocal camps on that subject.
Third, if you decide that bids at the minute of auction's end are not valid, is it fair that someone who had not been bidding, come and bid and win at the very last minute?
There are two schools of thought:
* 1. Bids accepted prior to the end time. End Time is 7:00 - a bid at 6:59 is accepted, a bid at 7:00 is too late. * 2. Bids accepted with the end time itself or earlier. End Time is 7:00 - a bid with a time of 7:00 is accepted, but 7:01 is too late
(It is most commonly held that the auction is over at the time listed, in our auction, no bids at 7:03 will be accepted, as the popular online-auction sites use that rule) However, there are some who think it is the first way. Again, clarify this ahead of time, don't wait till the last minute and find people fighting over it.
Many people make a rule that says if you haven't bid on an item, you aren't allowed to bid in the last hour/30 minutes of auction. This prevents someone like Bidder E from coming and bidding at the last minute and winning over several interested parties. However, I personally feel that rule is irrelevant if you use a snipe rule.
If you did not say anything about a snipe rule, you'll very likely find yourself at the end of some pretty angry people. (Although, in these days, for really nice items, if you don't post a snipe rule, usually someone will mention it and ask about it before-hand)
So, how can you save yourself headache? By setting up a few simple rules.
So, let's look at what a snipe rule is:
Definition of a 10-minute snipe rule: Auction will be extended by 10 min's if any bids are placed in the last 10 min's of the auction, and 10 min's for each bid after that (for a maximum of one hour).
Okay, you're thinking, well, what if the hour goes by and you end up with the same situation? I personally have never seen an auction get sniped for over an hour, but in the case of an item like our Gaunts listed above, it is a possibility. When I've run auctions, I don't add the clause limiting how long sniping can happen, simply because if you've got people fighting over an item, they are going to HAVE to keep bidding at least every 9 minutes to stay in it, trust me, someone will drop out of the running after a while.
However, now we have to look at the rule, and realize it is open to two ways of interpretation. I have lost an auction because I held to the belief that it meant the auction is extended 10 minutes from the original end time, but the seller thought it meant extended from the last bid time. So, seller decided the bid at 7:01 extended it to 7:11, and I thought it extended

[31]
from the last bid time. So, seller decided the bid at 7:01 extended it to 7:11, and I thought it extended it to 7:13. I lost, because I failed to ask for clarification from the seller ahead of time.
Let's look at the two ways it can be interpreted:
* 1. The end time is extended 10 minutes past the last bid * 2. The end time is extended 10 minutes past the original end time.
For example:
1.) 10 Minute Sniper: Bid posted at 6:57, extends auction to 7:07. Bid posted at 7:04, extends auction to 7:14
2.) 10 Minute Sniper: Bid posted at 6:57, extends auction to 7:10. Bid posted at 7:04, extends auction to 7:20.
Again, just be specific from the original post you make, so there is absolutely no way anyone could be confused. Using the wording above, you can avoid confusion later.

BTW, I was just looking at the timestamps which are inserted by the server and can not be edited.
22:54:00 - Brian Royer - 3) 300mil 22:57:00 - Betawolf - 3) 300mil 22:57:51 - Betawolf - 3) 310mil (Edit timestamp)
And AFAIK, all sniper rules extend from the time of posting, or in this case an edit a few seconds later as Betawolf saw that his bid only matched that of Brian Royer. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Originally by: Brian Royer He bid 310mil in number 4, not number 3 at 22:57. Get your information straight.
Your "already bidded about 4)300" threw me, so I didn't really look at the 3 or 4 correctly, my apologies.
22:54:00 - Brian Royer - 3) 300mil (extends +10 minutes to 23:10:00) 23:09:00 - Betawolf - 3) 310mil (extends +10 minutes to 23:19:00) 23:10:00 - Brian Royer - 3) 320mil (extends +10 minutes to 23:20:00)
But TBH, with all the editing it's hard to figure out what happened when, and I must admit that even your edit of 23:14:24 was within the time available.
I'll talk to Jed and yourself ingame and hopefully find an amicable solution. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein |
