I'd like to comment on the accusations that TTI has "cheated" and "exploited".
An individual in the game contacted a TTI member and stated a Jovian had given this item to him. He wished to trade this item for another object in the game produced by TTI.
As TTI is probably the wealthiest company in the game it is only logical that someone wanting cash or materials would contact us for a trade knowing we have the resources to conduct such a trade.
The person reported a Jovian had talked to him in game, gaining "information" about his mining activities (right in line with the role-playing nature of Jovians seeking information). The person then docked at a station.
The Jovian messaged him that he had left something outside and to undock immediately. The person did this and found the Jovian was gone but a cargo container was outside with this mining laser in it.
The person then contacted TTI about selling it. I can tell you the price of a battleship pales in comparison to what an item like this is worth.
TTI negotiated and subsequently purchased the item from the member. After running tests to verify its authenticity (indeed I was skeptical about it and warned it might be a photoshop trick when WE we're sent emails about it) the Venal Alliance posted a statement.
CCP has contacted our member and asked for the name of this other "member" which was provided to them (of course). We are committed to playing fair and NOT exploiting or cheating. The name of the Jovian was also provided although we personally have no information as to whether or not this is a GM or CCP member.
Transaction logs will show the course of events. It is our firm belief we operated ENTIRELY within the game mechanics of capitalism and free trade in purchasing this item at a very substantial cost. As we only have the original persons statement as to how the miner was obtained we can not verify the truthfulness of his claim.
That being said though the "in game role-playing" persona of the Jovians indicates a being who is obsessed with the accumulation of knowledge above all else. This would fit entirely into the story told to us by the finder of this mining laser. The Jovian asked him about mining, what he was doing, and other basic information. This is entirely in character (as far as I'm concerned) as to my impression of a Jovian contact situation.
That being said we will see what CCP says. They have the logs of this event and know we have not exploited or cheated to obtain this device. The device is factual and is not a photoshop trick nor is it a "fraud". We invite CCP to post a reply here regarding the logs and to issue a statement indicating TTI has obtained this device ENTIRELY within the mechanics of this game using NO exploits or cheats.
On a personal note I'm very offended that given our history of exposing cheaters and exploiters (we are very outspoken about it) people would accuse us of using these tactics. Rest assured ANYONE discovered by TTI using these methods will be booted from this company. There is no "second chance" here in regards to exploits and cheats.

I will add that given the fact TTI has operated in good faith in this transaction and done nothing wrong we fully expect CCP to issue a refund of ALL money and products in the transaction if they deem the item is to be removed.

Well its true Morkdt. We bought an item from someone in good faith. We have no way of knowing how he obtained it. He told us a story about a Jovian which honestly is right on target with the "role playing information seeking Jovians" we hear about.
Personally if it was a loot item from an exploding ship I would think differently. Until we know from CCP we need to wait and see. That being said we expect a FULL refund for this item as we operated in good faith.
We vigrously defend our right to buy whatever we want and encourage anyone else with unusual items to contact us. CCP's logs show we do not exploit merely purchase. It's called CAPITALISM and it works.

Stavos, I won't get into a flame war with you here, we acted in good faith in buying an item from a player in the game. That is ALL we did.
If CCP removes this item from our possession we expect a full refund. We acted in good faith and ENTIRELY within the mechanics of this game.
I have some questions though regarding new tech in this game. Are you suggesting we should email CCP everytime we see a new item ingame to make sure its "ok"?
The entire Jovian personna is one of "information seeking" and "high tech". What would they have left this guy in a can.... a shovel?
This event as reported to us by the person who sold us this miner indicates what I perceive to be a very realistic Jovian first-contact situation. It is how I would play a Jovian. They are a highly advanced race and have high-tech devices.
The point is all we did was take this guys word for it as to how he obtained it. The story sounded good (still sounds good) and is right in line with the perception we all have of Jovians. We've already posted the Jovians name on fiction page as you can see the name this guy provided us WAS factual.
Personally I expect CCP to issue a statement regarding TTI's actions in this event. You can't honestly expect people to ask CCP for an "ok" everytime a new tech device shows up can you? We acted within the game parameters and in good faith with someone. If the beam was obtained in a way other then what this person relayed to us then I expect it to be removed. I also expect TTI, an innocent party, to be fully compensated.

"yes you are capitalists, capitalism is governed by rules and if you buy stolen/dodgey goods you can go to prison for it in real life. So dont come that heap of smack..."
Well if you know they're stolen sure. In this case though we were told a story by someone that sounded good, a Jovian first-contact situation, if it wasn't true I wish it was, the thought of Jovians appearing and talking to people is cool.
You hate TTI and will argue with everything I say so I could care less I guess. I've posted we acted in good faith. I hope CCP releases the name of the person who sold this item to us (I won't) so you can all jump all over him instead of us. HE is the one who obtained this device and if he did lie to us about it - cheated.
Your constant complaints about TTI is like someone blaming a******victim because she had on a short skirt and was enticing. We were the victims here if this person did lie to us. It's not "smack" nor anything else.

Edited by: Calladen Nimitz on 07/08/2003 01:24:21 I won't be reply anymore to this thread. Its degenerated into another "hate TTI" flamewar. Personally all we want is to be left alone in game without every clown in town attacking us to "get famous" (that is a motive they've told us in a few cases).
No one can honestly expect people to seek CCP's "ok" everytime a new item appears in space. Jovians are high-tech and they have high-tech stuff. This report as given to us by the seller of this beam was right inline with what I would expect a Jovian encounter to be like. If this person lied to us we are the victim of a fraud by this person.
Our contacts with Polaris, CCP, GM's and Simon and Schuster are not part of our corporation. These parties can grant no favors ingame to TTI nor do we ask for them. As an example I'm STILL waiting on a petition to be fixed for a battleship bp copy bug (two weeks now) so its clear our "friendships" with people do not translate into game benefits. Also this miner was a "secret" among the executives in TTI until it was posted on the website for all to see. It's likely no TTI member who was Polaris even knew about it until everyone else did.
I always admired your combat skills Stavos. I guess I'm personally a little upset that you've turned this from what would've really been a neat ingame encounter with a Jovian (tell me you don't want to believe it) to a personal attack on our real life ethics. We've acted in good faith in buying an item from someone in game. We await CCP's statement.
