I'm just looking for an explanation of the best way to fend missiles off, since I tend to get pasted pretty hard by them.
Defenders?
Smart Bombs?
Whattaya think?

I use a smartbomb
Nota bene: using a smartbomb for defence when mining or close to miners is NOT SMART
Some weeks ago we lost quite a few dozen K's of omber and plagioclase when someone accidentally hit the F5 instead of F4 (mining laser vs smartbomb), happened twice actually.

Or you can use the Auto Targetting System to take them out. I've heard this worked, but not used it. Not had a missile fired at me yet

Edited by: Ecchus on 07/08/2003 21:15:12 Edited by: Ecchus on 07/08/2003 21:13:45 My only concern about defenders is that I lost a pirate drop to one, it happened to be in the blast radius. PLus it doesn't seem that they're catching all the incoming. Are smartbombs that effective? And which is best for anti-missile use..
Or am I just not using defenders properly?

Defenders frequently get confused about who/what they are defending and it's not unheard of for them to defend you from yourself ie they have been known to loop back and attack the ship that launched them. IMHO anyone using defenders is clinically insane
Shield boosters, shield hardeners and shield skills are your friend. Start there then of course you can add further defences. Do the basics first.
Oh and for the guy who mentioned autotargeters - not much use unless your targeting skills are good and you also have some modules to speed up targeting.

The best defense against missiles is to kill the platform shooting them as quickly as possible. Which is why I would rather just shoot Heavy Missiles at the ship shooting missiles at me, rather than use up defenders against missiles. That is in addition to being hit by my 250mm rails, 650 cannons or Heavy Beams (usage of weapon depending on days of the week or the mood I am in). I locate the missile shooter in the pirate NPC pack, and take them out first (for example Blood Arch Engraver vs. Arch Reaver.)
But you will still need to brace yourself with hardeners and boosters. _______________________________________________ "Is it me or the bad guys just getting totally pathetic?"---Clover, Totally Spies, "Hope is wasted on the Hopeless."---Mandy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Depending on how the engagement starts there are several ways to deal with missiles.
You are mining...
Use defenders and let your drones take out the offending rate or have a longrange weapon take out the rate quickly. Since you are mining and probably having a container close to you you might not wish to loose it too quickly.
I dislike to move away from my container because this means I have to disengage mining as well. But doing it the safe way it is best to head away from your container when the missiles start buzzing. Having a shield hardener and a smartbomb will deal with most missiles. For smaller vessels two smartbombs will take out most missiles easily again only fire those when well away from container and drones. Let your drones take out the target after the target has you locked not before since then the rate will start firing on your drones. Using heavy drones will make a big difference and will let you get away with a lot of mistakes. But as a good course make it a habbit to let your drones attack only once you are the rates main target.
You are pirate hunting....
In big engagements where I get head to head with 4x40k isk rates and 1x50isk rate I stay well beyond their firing range make a shot at one only and let is get closer. Take it out from afar while using hardeners and smartbombs to take out the missiles from close range. Having a battleship sortof makes it doable.
In my experiences smartbombs are really great and a lot more inexpensive than defenders. The hardeners are again a simple way of diminishing damages from those little things. But to avoid is better than to swallow. :)

Alrighty, for those who saw this and contributed thank you, but I found this in another thread:

Looks like I wasn't wrong that defenders aren't working very well.

... on the funny idea to shoot at missiles:
Okay, I find this tactic most attracting - though haven't had any trouble with missiles yet. A little how-to please!
I have an auto-targeting device (from the market, okay?) and 1 Heavy Ion-Blaster (with Iridium because of the 1.1 range modifier) for short-distance combat. So should I fit a second Blaster or use different ammo to fend off missiles?
If so, I would have - 2 250er Rails - 2 Heavy Ion Blasters - Devastator CM's
Will this be okay for a first contact?

Shooting missiles.
Strange as it may seem it is actually quite effective. I run with lasers on my cruiser and when fired upon by a missile cruiser I use one laser to manually target the missile and destroy it.
It is also effective as a long range solution to protecting members of your gang. One ship moves in closer and opens fire the other ship hangs back and just targets missiles. A few get through but in the end you get a dead pirate (NPC)with little damage to yourself or your companions.

I use a smartbomb but against higher NPCs it's ineffective. MY Micrsmartbomb with 24 thermal damage can't destroy the missiles a 50k NPC fires at you. You'd need a small or medium smartbomb most likely. I don't want to use so much cpu/grid only for a smartbomb tho. Anyone tested small smartbombs with 50k NPCs?
