[7] Edited by: Tsaya on 07/08/2003 11:57:10 *kicks Nicholas Marshal from the podium* Bennie, youre on the right track, the name is derived from that firm. In MMORPG it means making good items a lot worse, in an attempt to balance the game. It is normally used by people who consider a change unfair or too radical. It has been thought to be like changing real guns so that they fire foam bullets. P.S.: No, nicholas, you cant have my stuff (just want to make that sure before you ask ;). But maybe ill give you a cruisemissile to ride into the dusk on it ;). |

[11] Bennie, That's actually where it comes from. AFIAK the following is the origin of this term in MMORPGS: In early UO (Ultima Online) there was once a patch that your weapons sucked so bad that you be killed by a bunny and your weapon was about as effective as a Nerf gun. Hence your ability to fight has been "nerfed". Now the word is used for just about anything that had to be changed (be it exploit or game balance) and has been made less powerful. |

[21] Nerf: the act of reducing an effective item or strategy into being useless to compensate for others short falls. Usually results from poor game planning and design and/or failure to resolve balance issues during a games beta phase. I believe the nerfs in this game are due mostly just to beta being closed too soon (even though the release was already overdue). The Wretch Cyberdyne Systems CEO |

[27]Originally by: Dr CaligineusOriginally by: Daesdemona Yep, except that the Xerox system was designed as a commercial publishing machine. Was pretty fancy back it's day, I got to play with one a few times. Very powerful system for the mid 80's. Wasn't practical for home use, I remember my boss saying that the operating system took him two days of swapping 5.25" floppies every couple minutes. Must have been a couple hundred disks.... and you though Windows XP was a bloated OS. |

[29] Edited by: Lavinrac Krad on 16/04/2007 18:44:20 Nerfs are the wrath of the developer gods. See when people are happy and content, others are unhappy and weak. To equalize the situation, the developer gods make people, who are happy and content, unhappy and weak as well. To be nerfed is to wear the mark of the developer gods' wrath upon you. |

[35]Originally by: Svenstaro Lol funny, though I'm pretty sure there is such a thing as a nerf bat. I remember it as a metal pole with nerf foam forming a bat shape around it. It had a handle with rivets in it. Now if I've ever seen a ban stick IRL before...that I can't say. ----- |
