I used defender missiles for the first time the other day:
I went corp hunting, against NPC pirates in a 0.0 system (thankfully), the pirates started to fire missiles so i tried countering with defenders, only problem was my defender decided to fly at my corp CEO's battleship, i then tried a second time, this time they came back at me, they didn't hurt too much but have made me quite nervous when i use them (they do work occasionally).
Has anyone else had any similar problems, or can anyone give me any advise to get them to work properly? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No Drones were harmed in the making of this post
Here's one for all you carebears out there :P |

I was the lucky one getting the missle on me.
I found a reason perhaps: Having modules activated makes the defender think you are a target. At that moment i had Prototype 1 Sensor Booster and an 70% thermal resistance booster activated. When i turned it off, the next one went for Draconis. __________________________

Defenders are not working propertly. Use either a strong smartbomb or an autotargetter with a high ROF close-range turret. There are numerous threads about counter-missile solutions including detailed suggestions re. load-outs, both here and on www.eve-i.com so I won't bore everyone by crossposting. I especially recommend the fighter forum on eve-i.

Defenders need to be fired 20-15km from the incoming missile to actually do anything. At this range, you do not even need to face the incoming missile. If the defender leaves the launcher while the incoming missile is closer than 10km, then forget about it hitting anything but your corp mates or yourself. As I see it, they work partly, but should be fixed so they work more consistantly.

Do I wish that was true for the NPC rats as well... they'll happily 'defend' my rockets (yes I know, they are crap but I like 'em) when I send them at the rat at 5km.
