I'm in a small (seven-member) corp. We're all pretty new -- around 3 mos -- and so far do a bit of everything. We generally mine only to fund other activities or to treat insomnia; however, we do have a couple mid-level barge drivers in the group. No piracy, but we are cutting our teeth in PvP.
We're starting to think about joining an alliance, mainly for access to 0.0 space. My questions are:
- How do you choose an alliance? Seems a lot more complicated than choosing a corp.
- What are the mechanics of opening discussions with an alliance? Which member corp(s) do you contact?
- Other than protected low-sec access, what are the benefits for an independent corp of joining an alliance?
- Any suggestions as to an alliance that might be interested in our group?

Take care when forming an alliance i hear they cost billions to start and then millions per week to maintain. I personally have several 'verbal' alliances to save not only cash but the paper work and if one he alliances enters a war... you could also be in for it...

the problem is not many allianced would have a 7 member corp have you though about merging into an existing corp at all?

Well, we all know each other a bit from outside the game, and that leads to a bit of trust that we don't yet have with any other corps. So, we're not really driven to merge with anyone else just yet, although we would like to hit the 15-member mark at some point, just to fill out roles. We recruited a couple new members in-game, but they were not vetted well and emptied the corp hangar. 
Any tips on how we might scope out a merger partner?

I don't know... try to contact someone from G or IRON or RZR... and go taste 0.0 in Pure Blind. I kinnda doubt that any alliance would take 7 member corp per se...

Join FOUNDATION Alliance. We are the protectorates of Great Wildlands. We have a purpose so your PVP experiences will not be meaningless. Our goal is to free GW and make it an area of fun for all. Currently at war with Veritas Immortalis, We are contesting the area and taking GW back as we speak. We are a close knit type of alliance. We have many friends and only 2 real enemies.. If I were you I'd pair up with 1 or 2 corps with similar interests to your own, see how that works out.
