Edited by: Alvara on 08/11/2005 20:14:58 Just posted this as a reply to one discussion or another, but I thought it should be dumped in this area as its own idea.
Make two mining specific Modules, or maybe more to support various levels of mining. Both use high slot.
One would go on the miner, call it ore conveyor. Another one would go on a hauler called an Ore Chute.
The miner would target the hauler, and then activate the Ore Conveyor on the hauler.
To make different types of conveyors, just give a cycle time and how much cubage of ore it can move, you would want one that could move more then you can mine in that cycle time. If they have a lower conveyor cubage then what they can mine, they still have to move it over by hand every once in a while. Probably 1 minute cycles. To make different types of Chutes, just give the Chute a max size of Ore it can accept. Say 10 m3, so larger, ie more profitable ores can't be moved over, unless you have a higher end Chute.
Cost for the miner is a lower mining rate, since one of their precious high slots get used up. Benefit is allowing the miner to pay attention to more important things like corp chat, npc rats and player rats.
Think of those big produce harvesters with a truck driving along side at a farm.
Clarification: This would allow a miner to directly dump his ore from his hold to another ship, probably a hauler, without any user intervention after it was setup.

Edited by: Syris Anu on 08/11/2005 20:35:02 Edited by: Syris Anu on 08/11/2005 20:33:03 How about instead of a module, a deployable object (Fixed Mining Platform I?) that allows any ship to automatically have any new cargo contents moved into it? This way, a mining operation could deploy a mining platform as it would an anchored can and miners could mine to it without doing the drag and drop thing over and over again. Meanwhile, the industrial could come and go, perhaps also attaching for automatic transfer until its cargo hold was full (with a nice toaster BING sound effect). Make sure it has capacity equal to or exceeding a jet can.
Just make sure to give good range for this so miners can move about the belt, as well as low anchoring and unanchoring time. Only allow in .4- to encourage more mining there and outside the heavily used secure systems, and simultaneously protect from any exploitation by macro miners (who already have the drag and drop thing taken care of anyway). Make up something about .5+ system having local authorities who don't want mining platforms in their systems stripping all their roids while protection is offered for free by CONCORD. This would make the mining game much more ergonomic and enjoyable.

I think that is too much Syris. Would make it too easy to mine. Since it is all benefit with no downsides.
The range I was thinking on my idea was 1.5 km, same as jetcan range.

Sounds like a macro build into the game. Put 2 accounts in belt and goto sleep.
Nah, the mining system is fine as it is.

the chute idea isn't bad though and i would eliminate a lot of need for jet cans as mining tools

If making it easier to mine = less having to drag and drop from one window to another, then yes. But do we really want to spend our time doing this? It's not fun. The fun is in selecting the asteroids you are going to mine and keeping an eye out for attackers. Get rid of the repetitive action.
Also, note, the macro thing is self-correcting if you limit the fixed mining platform to .4-. No one will macro mine there as players like myself will come along and pop their whole fleet. This will also encourage people to mine in .4- as their choice will be skull crushing boredom dragging rocks from one window to another in high security or not having to in low security, but accepting additional risk.

Why not have the hauler have a special module that lets him take stuff straight out of the miner's cargo hold?

sounds like hes a lazy miner who cant afford 2 acconts, but all that aside, you would make all the macro miners uber rich!
