Hi
I saw a thread on this forum I while ago about which are the best providers. Well Telewest do the best deals by far. But if like me you don't live in a cable area then I recommend BT YAHOO broadband. They are not that cheap ú23.99 a month 20 gig download limit but they have good custmer service. Plus if you say your gunna switch they will give you ú3 a month off like me  .
WARNING: Do not be fooled by others like TISCALI they claim 'unlimited downloads' but in fact this is to try and confuse you. They have a 'fair usage policy' which they limit or stop your service if you use peer to peer or just download a lot; unlmited downloads is bulls**t! If you dont use peeer to peer then fair enough I dont know if online games will effect usage.
If anyone knows any good deals without a 'fair usage policy' then let me know

I'm not sure, but for me, when I swapped my BT 'offical' modem for something else, I was able to get unlimted downloading per month. (I got every episode of B5, all 30 gigs worth in less than 2 weeks). Its worth finding out for yourself.

As the above poster has mentioned, I'v enever been able to find fault with Zen. Though their tech support dept is only open till 8pm, the fact I can ask practically any question and have it answered by intelligent people in the UK, not a call center in India makes them the best tech support dept I've dealt with (Net Central get an honourary tip of my hat as well).
Zen give 1 gig of web space, no caps, no blocked ports, Email with AV, an excellent Usenet feed and 1 or 8 static IPs free for the asking. Best ISP I've been with, and I've been with BT before they joined with Yahoo (used to work in their call center to in years past, not the Indian one!). I'm hoping they get in on ADSL2 when everyone else does to save me switching. 24Mbit DSL is calling to me

Nice one... may well sign up for Zen. Moving house on Saturday and have been looking for a new ISP as plus.net have turned from one of the best to utter crap recently, limiting my 1mb connection to dload speeds of literaly 2k/s for P2P.

I work for the UK's 2nd ADSL provider, ive worked here for 3 years and I am emplyed as a senior technician (3rd line support at the call centre).
What i would reccomend you think about when you want a connection is this.
Q: How much do i actualy download?
All ISP's will monitor your bandwidth useage, this is what costs them. Alot of ISP's offer 'limited' packages that allow xGb of downloads, now here is the kicker, some ISP's (BT, tiscali that i know of 100%) will include in your allotment basic network traffic, so even if you diddnt look at pages check email etc they will still count it, use bandwidth monitor pro so you get a idea about how much you use.
Q: Am i on a Datastream or IPstream product?
Datastream (fixed rate ADSL) is a old version of ADSL that is VERY reliable and good it does however mean that any changes to your service speed will require a cease and reorder, meaning a few days downtime.
IPstream (Adaptive) This is the daddy of BT ADSL Technology, this allows you to swap speeds, packages, price plans when you want with a minimal of disruption. However it is well known for going wonkey.
Q: This ISP said i can have a 10Mb line but that one said i can only have 2Mb. Its likely that you can only get 2Mb speed on adaptive and 10Mb on Fixed rate.

Q: How long do you want ADSL for?
Many ISPs will dazzle you with free this, free that and whisper about a 18 month contract, if your a uni student thats no good to you, very few ISP's offer a less than 12 month contract, my isp doesnt have a min time contract. Im not disclosing their name as this isnt a advert, but pop me a in game mail and ill let you know.
Q: Tech support?
What happens when my connection goes down? If your using a router your likely to be told that tey cant help you, so ensure that you have a USB modem and for gods sake buy a decent router! Bt voyagers, mentors, zooms... you tell your support team you have one of those and you will either be redialling cause the tech cut you off or being told that its the router causing the issue.
Q: Looking around for info on your ISP, sites like ADSL guide are useless for this, its a place where people go to whine, you rarely get any constuctive information.
Have a look at the ISPA's site, you learn alot there.

I use tiscali and from how long ive used it, games do not get affected to its fair usage policy from how i play eve, from about 4-5 hours a day during peak times. ive done a peer to peer download once where i downloaded some files about 1500mb odd and did not get tiscali send me a mail about the fair usage policy and a first warning.
tbh you can play games during peak times and mabey download things during off-peak, eg night times how i did then the policy will not affect you, but thats just from my experience

Here in France we do not have "data usage" and we have Triple Play (Internet, VoIP, TV) for 29.99 Ç max (ú 20)
Near the DSLAM (DSL structure)( up to 2,5 km) you get 20MB down and 1 MB up.

I used to use BT but then the caps have been introduced.
I'm using Freedom2surf. Works out 25 quid a month for an 8Mb uncapped line which isn't too shabby. Better service than the evil Bulldog as well

I just wanted to point out that f2s have been bought out by Pipex. The unofficial freedom 2 surf forums, (here), are full of people getting a little stressed over what the future holds.

Been with Zen about 18 months , in that time prolly had less than 24 hours in total with no connection , works for me .

I'm thinking Blydchyld works for f2s (1 month rolling contract), in which case I want a job! kthanks.
back to the original point - I've been a customer with Nildram and plus.net and now f2s. And I am quite sure overall I'd recommend F2S for their no-nonsense approach. Though there wasnt really anything I would *not* recommend Nildram for, I just happened to move...
The f2s upto8mb LLU package for 25 per month with unlimited bandwidth is a particularly nice option - even if I find I dont need the speed at the moment.
