Since most of the lag surrounding fleet battles happens when one party jumps into the system of the party, how about a timer that kicks in in such an event and would 'quarantine' a system for a certain time period and disable combat.
For example, fleet A of 100 ships decides to jump into system XYZ where another 100 ships are camping the gate. The server would recongnize an fleet engagement and disable locking of player targets for either a certain time frame (like 5 mins) or would be able to wait until fleet A has actually fully landed in system XYZ before enables combat again.
I just had the pleasure of experiencing fleet lag last night when our superior force jumped into a system and uber lag hit us. We had covert ops on the other side of the gate and he witnessed patches of ships warping in periodically, ie 5 ships appearing infront on 50 ships, therefore handing the enemy our superior force in easy to chew bits. (btw that was SA vs G alliance last night in stain)

that exactly why CCP won't do this change because if it allowed you to get your entire fleet through before the battke started the defenders wouldn't ever really have an advantage and effectively who ever had the largest fleet would always win

mmmm I really dont think thats why.... Pretty much there shouldnt ever be lag, in a perfect world...but since CCP isnt super rich and cant have 20 servers dedicated to every huge fleet battle...gonna get lag.
Thats just very unfortunate to have happen. Next time let them fly into your guns :)
Oh and deploy all drones for super lag

Or send a Tact Nuke through the gate first. ------------------ I am not the pheasant plucker, I'm the pheasant plucker's mate. I am only plucking pheasants 'cause the pheasant plucker's running late. |

In theory good idea, in practise bad. If a 5 minute cease fire comes into effect then you might aswell get 100 AF's with lasers get into 1km range and just wait.. really stack the odds..

wow that is pretty good, perhaps a ship that lets u arm it, undock, 5sec later, kabooom, 300km radius EM, EXplosive, kin and therm dmg, = to maybe 100k RAW HP
ship should cost lots though and be uninsurable, which company would insure this :P

Well i was reading this thread and having a good laugh last week, and this week I was part of a fleet that jumped into a system (brought local to 145) and I was in a pod before I saw populated space. I was dead before I got 1k back to the gate, to run.
the group that was there did not have any lag that we could tell all the arriving fleet just kind of died over the course of 5 minutes as we arrived piece meal at the gate, some got lucky and arrived 1au from the gate. <sarcasam> I guess its much better to break a fleet up into each ship at a new spot. </sarcasm>
Our entire fleet was hosed by the single system single cpu lag problem. If you want to issolate a system instance they need to split the instance to seperate threads on each cpu so it can take advantage of multiple cpus in a single box. IE a 2/4/8 cpu machine is running region X with threads for every system running on each cpu, so when the uber lag comes it will slow everyone a little but not have the crippling lag I had today.
The single system lag issue needs to become a focal point, because it just kills the fun. I don't mind getting zapped, but not even having a chance to do anything just sucks.

Its not always the defenders. The other day, BoB (I think) was camping a system, and a northern fleet jumps in. The BoB fleet crashes - Proud member of the [23].

Fleet battles need some love,
We had a battle the other night and the 0.0 system had over 300 people in it. I jumped in and it took me 3 hrs to get back into the game, no joke!
I got the black screen of death then crashed and could not log back in for ages, however, I was lucky as the hostiles also crashed so I kept my ship.
