Today is the anuiversary of the end of the First World War we celebrate the end to war on this day and remember those who have lost their lives in all wars.
Today reminds me of my grandfather who lived through the Second world war. He fought in the Royal Navy and went on to raise a wonderful family. Until he died in august last year he often spoke of friends long gone who were not as lucky as he was.
So today please carry this thought in your head.
"For our tomorrow, they gave their today."

Yes, remember them.
My grandfather was also in the Navy, but on supply ships. His ship was sunk in the Mediterranian, just north of africa. He swam to shore, and here I am

Luckily, the 2 minute silence will fall at Eve's DT, so at least there's no need to request people stop playing for that time.

Yes, take a moment to remember.
Don't forget, today is not just to remember those who died in the two Great Wars so that we can enjoy our lives today, but also the service men and women of today who let us continue to enjoy our lives.
And. Let us also extend our rememberance and thanks beyond the armed forces, to the men and women of the emergency services who we have seen, who both on 9/11 in the US and in the UK on 7/7, and on the countless days before and after, who show levels of bravery and selflessness beyond belief so that we may continue to enjoy our lives.

It's amazing how refined & precise war has become since then... ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE |

For the Fallen by Laurenc Binon
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres, There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted; They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam.
But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night;
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain; As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain.

In terms of weapons advancements, and the drastically decreased loss of life.
What once took 100's of B-17's to accomplish can now be done with just one B2 bomber.
It's amazing how warfare has changed in just the 90 odd years since WWI, and really makes you think about what those soldiers went through...
Makes you respect them even more...

Etnic cleansing is still on the agenda of any real war, dress it up however much you want.
Btw, anyone from Narvik around? I need a name off of a war monument up there.
Remind me about The Maze.

It hasnt gotten any cleaner or more precice, Bhaal. There just hasnt been a major war between two evenly equipped powers since then. Compareing any war that has happened to a major power since is like compareing apples and oranges. (comparing the Iraq/Iran war on the other hand might prove informative)
If Iraq had modern anti-bomber weaponry even close to on par with that of the USA, then we would have needed swarms of B2s to gaurentee a kill on the target.
War has merely gotten more destructive, the precision only happens in extremely technologically imbalanced situations like the US attacking Iraq. Remember even the b-17 could drop a bomb on target almost every time in practice runs when there werent fighters and flack gunners trying to blow said b-17 out of the sky.
I sincerely hope to never see a near even war between two first world powers in my lifetime. It would be nice to see the modern world learn from such memory filled days as today and perhaps learn from mistakes of the past.
God is with us. |
