Often when i set a location to dock to it takes ages once it has arrived at the station to actually dock, and often I just float around instead. Is there any surefire way to dock, aside from repeatedly hitting "dock"? ________________________________________________

You answered your own question. Frustrating isn't it?

It appears that when you attempt to dock from a distance, the station forgets once you get near enough, if it has taken you a while to get there, so ask to dock again when within 10k range.

If ur going to use the station a lot make a bookmark or two for points 20km past the staion on your normal flight/crawl into dock. As when u warp to bookmarks you drop out of warp 20km back this can drop u right on the station and instant dock.

this one works for me. do the dock thing. then change your mind and go investigate that can floating or look at a ship near station. you will dock everytime before you get where you want go. another one that works for me. is warp to station. then just fly past, without using dock command. about 1/3rd of time I will auto dock just because i am near the station

I believe it may have somthing to do with your speed, as I frequently get this problem due I think to using triple afterburners.
If I engage them as I come out of warp it seems to work, but if I am too late and the docking sequence has already begun, then I usually overshoot and have to dock again.
I suspect some optimization code is being used to disable continuous checking of the docking sequence, but this is being fooled by the rapid change in speed.
Normally it wouldn't notice, but in my case my speed goes from around 600 m/s to over 1500 m/s, quite a difference !
