Was a decent film with a few plot inconsistencies, but over all a good sci fi flick.
if your still having doubts about seeing it or not, if you like sci-fi, you'll like after earth. An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded. A narrow mind is a focused mind.

I didn't really care all that much for it. At it's core AE was really a father-son drama, not a particularly good one, it came across as a Will Smith/Jaden Smith vehicle with sci-fi trappings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzA_xesrL8 |

It starred Will Smith as a piece of furniture out of fear of stealing all the scenes from his son. The problem is his son is too inexperienced to play a lead role.
I did like how the whole movie plays out as a video game though. Support character, quests, potions. We miss you Saede. In-depth guide on how to safely mine in High Sec |

IMO, it was just above mediocre science fiction.
Decent concept, but unoriginal. Great set design and some beautiful special effects. Plot was flimsy. Will smith did a decent job acting (a good part of his shortcomings were the one-dimensional character), his son is obviously very green.
I'd say overall, the movie is a 6-7/10. Nothing special, but decent entertainment.
Good science fiction makes you walk out of the theater just rambling about it with friends and thinking about its themes days later. After Earth most certainly will not. TEST Alliance BEST Alliance |

If it were Will Smith and somebody else, I'd go see it. But I developed a severe allergy to Jaden Smith after The Day the Earth Stood Still. Jaden totally ruined that movie. |

It was a decent movie. I couldn't help but notice however that they REALLY over acted. I'm talking how they would pronounce words like freaking robots. IE You. Need. To. Inject. Yourself. With. The first. Antidote. Then. With. The. Second. Antidote.
I was getting really really pissed off at that, like angry for some reason. |

I dunno, I think the way they were talking in the film was supposed to be some kind of accent from the future. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzA_xesrL8 |

The only huge plot hole that bugged me was after he got of the boar hole and his weapon just magically disappeared. An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded. A narrow mind is a focused mind.

Agreed, although I would have to say you're too generous with the rating. I'd say 4/10 would be as high as I could comfortably rank it. Despite the fact I had low expectations, I was still disappointed by the film.
Will Smith waffled between colloquial English and some kind of post-modern robot intonation. I dare say even his inexperienced son did a better job of convincing me he was in-character. The plot was completely forgettable. Saw it less than 48 hours ago and I already forgot most of it (thank goodness). |

I feel bad for M. Night Shyamalan. He had some great films early on (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs wasn't too bad), but then he had a string of flops of movies that weren't good (The Village, Lady in the Water, The Last Airbender).
Then he gets approached by Will Smith with an idea for a bad film. I'm thinking Will Smith thought he'd have a summer blockbuster that would be a vehicle for his son to be some future A-lister while resurrecting Shyamalan's career. Which... really didn't turn out.
I think this whole thing is just simply the result of Will Smith's ego being too damned big. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzA_xesrL8 |

Hey. Be fair to Mr Smith - he is truly a brilliant actor when he tries. TEST Alliance BEST Alliance |

No doubt.
Funny thing about Will Smith's acting career - the only reason he started acting was to pay off the IRS on delinquent taxes he didn't pay from his DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince days.
Turned out to work real well for him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTzA_xesrL8 |

Too many effects-driven thrillers and you start to forget what there was to get out of films.
That said, Star Trek was far better than After Earth (by any metric you please) though it was even more of an effects film. |

Despite the more positive comments on this thread, that was pretty much what was Red Letter Media's take on After Earth (and worse).
I haven't seen it myself, nor intend to, so I can't personally comment - but I find that I enjoy more watching video criticisms / commentaries on the crap Hollywood keeps churning out (such as those by RLM), than the movies themselves. |

Or, as in this case, where neither one is thoughtful or entertaining. |
