With the "sudden" announcement of Chribba's Eve-Offline site we thought it appropriate to post a teaser shot of our current index page. We won't rush something before it is ready. We have removed the site name as we intend to make an official launch in the near future.

Please note that Chribba is working on www.eve-offline.net - our site will have a different name. We are not involved together. It just so happens that we are two teams working on two new sites and both coming to the fore at the same time.

Super, I will be looking forward to your launch as I am sure you will hold the quality and usability of EVE-I.
But I am jealous... I haven't figured out the server display yet :/ Want to share your secrets?
Any ETA on launch?

Good luck to both of you, Chribba and Latta. EVE-I left some big shoes to fill, I think you two will do so admirably.

I keep telling you all, there is a file on the server with the usercount.
Anyway, all the best to both sites. Let's hope that two sites doesn't mean half quality.

I still say if you guys have a common goal then you should combine your efforts. But that's just me. :)

But how? lol WTB Guidelines for a merging two community sites
Altho out of curiousity... Latta, how many people are there working on your side with this. I know at least from my side joined efforts wouldn't be a hard decision since I'm alone.

Not hard at all. Most assuredly, any frankensite borne of the merging of the two would have components from both of you you. Host it whereever it feels appropriate (just remember the insanity that was the bandwidth usage EVE-I...). Above all else, put a picture of the two of you shaking hands and patting each other on the back for a job well done.
No hugging though, unless it's a fast, manly hug (minimal upper body contact, duration of no more than a half second, no looking into each others eyes).

Aye, I agree. Delay the debut of both and spend the proper time merging them together into an uber mega-site (tm)!

Hello,
Let me intoduce myself, i am the webmaster, site designer, lead programmer and project manager for EVEnews.com
This is the site Latta is helping with along with an already impressive group of people from the EVE Community.
The staff team is comprised by 2 core programmers and around 10 content writers who are headed up by Latta.
The site is designed to be much more than what EVE-i was, infact the end goal of the site is to build a vibrant and consolidated EVE community site.
When i started the project i had no idea Chribba had begun work on his own project, unfortunatly it seems that Chribba codes in ASP, www.evenews.com is created using PHP with a mySQL backend.
At this late stage in inital development of the site i do not wish to bring on additional programmers as this will only delay the release time while these people are brought upto speed on the design method etc.
While i wont say no to Chribba helping with the project at a future point in time i cannot offer any more staff positions for site development. However there is plenty of content positions available. If you feel like you would wish to contribute you can email me and the rest of the Project Team Lead's at [email protected] Please provide details of what you believe you could bring to the site.
As for the launch date of the site. That has been set as the 1st of December 2005. We are currently in the process of finishing off the launch features and making sure it is as bug free as possible.
The current feature set includes:
Forums FAQ Section Interviews with leading community members and CCP Guides to various aspects of EVE Reviews of various aspects of EVE Preview of RMR Fiction archive
Database Items Agents Characters Missions
Cartography Verse Complexes COSMOS
Downloads of all your old EVE-i favourites and more
Image gallery.
Along with an ingame user registration system for players corporations and alliances.
Each group can post bloggs, news, advertise on various areas of the site (for ISK of course).
Shortly after launch we hope to include, a dynamic soverignty map for alliances to manage between themselves offering an automatic upto date map. We also hope to build a consolidatary Kill board system, with the help of other killboard creators stream the data into our database and build a central database of kill mails. But not just in the standard sence, we hope to use an ELO style ranking system which awards players for use of EW/Support/Kill Assist etc
Myself or Latta will make an announcement in the near future with more details of what you can expect at launch
Oh and before i forget, it also has multiple server monitor graphs and to do it we have an array of highly trained monkeys updating it around the clock :D

Incase you are wondering, the web server is running off a gigabit internet connection. The reason for EVE-i's slow performance was due to its lack of SQL query caching. EVEnews.com as a rule will never perform an SQL query unless it is user specific.
All pages are static, and dynamically created at set intervals throughout the day. Mainly because the majority of pages do not change that often.

Edited by: Chribba on 18/11/2005 16:41:24 Nice a most welcomed early christmas present for sure! It sounds like it will be what the community needs, keep up the good work!
I gotta ask tho... EV1Servers would be kinda expensive in the long run unless you get it paid somehow. Donations? Or would one fear the loss of it due to lack of money?

Looks cool Latta. Working together with Chribba is probably gonna be difficult (due to differences in the platforms used). So, may the best one win :)

Any chance you can provide an "export to excell" option for parts of the item database or a "comparision" sheet that can easily be cut and pasted?
Actually being able to look at stuff without hitting your site and draining your bandwidth all the time might help cut expenses.

Edited by: Latta on 18/11/2005 21:07:35 Thanks for the kind words everyone, and yes, our efforts have been developed in parallel with Chribba! Best of luck to you with www.eve-offline.net Chribba! As our webmaster states the marriage of the two sites would be difficult and we are still rushing to meet our published deadline.
We look forward to a mutually beneficial working relationship with you in the future though, like eve-i had with eve-gate and other fansites.
I am very positive about our new team and I am sure it will grow to fullfill your most challenging expectations. We have started an internal wishlist and you are invited to request additions to the site in this thread. Once our forums are online we can work it from there. Bear in mind we have set products we want to get live for the launch so they will not make it at launch date neccesarily.
It is also worthy to mention that should you wish to assist in any way you are welcome to contact us. I am unfortunately currently only reachable via ingame mail, but if you are a budding fiction writer and wish to contribute to the site and make a name for yourself in the future history of Eve - feel free to drop me a line.

our item database is compiled from the excel spreadsheet provided by t20 in his blog. Thus an export feature seems totally useless.
