I have a theory This may answer the question why we are having lag and the record number of people coming into Eve. The MMO community has always been a small amount of dedcatied players who love the MMO market that has been growing slowy. Then something happend. Blizzard released WoW and increased the number of new MMO players by... well a lot!
Now some of these WoW players are tired of WoW, but they still need that MMO fix we all need! so, they look and start going to games like Eve, CoH, and other MMO's that are fun. Believe me or not the world of MMO's is about to enter a Dark age! *puts on "The End is Near" board*

MMOs got big with Ultima and everquest. WoW probably brought a lot of new players, but I don't think it was the population explosion you believe. Eve is so different from WoW, its the least likely to be affected by anything having to do wiht it. ------------------ Silver Night Director -Production and Science

I played Eve over 2 years ago when it first came out. I gave up on it after a few months cause it was 2 slow. I had been playing WOW for less than 3 months when I heard about the Guiding Hand Social Club heist and decided to come back. It's been almost 3 months back in Eve and I'm loving it.

First mmo I played was Americas Army Online... Quit playing that and I was looking for a good mmorpg and a girl I know (always the source of trouble imho) plays WoW, so I almost joined that, then decided to test Eve. Sure glad I did. _______________________________________________

It's actually called Meridian 59... still running I believe, although it WAS shut down for a while. It was sold by 3D0, and was re-released under the same name by it's new owner, Near Death Studios. It has since been retooled with better graphics.
Meridian 59 was released in 1996, about 3 years before EverQuest, and a full 18 months before Ultima. It had a slow start though, and was not very popular at all.. basically it was just a MUD with a Doom-like graphics engine... funny really, but the majority of the people who should have loved it (MUD players) just couldn't give up their text-based games for the graphic version. Something about TYPING the words "Kill Dragon" just was better than clicking on a dragon, I guess. :)
If you count MUDs, then MMORPG has been around for even longer than Meridian 59, but Meridian can take the prize as the first commercially available graphics-based MMORPG.. and in fact, 3DO is credited with coining the term MMORPG in the first place! :)
And depending on your definition of "Multiplayer" and "Massive"... Bulletin Board games like Trade Wars and Empire could possibly be classified as even earlier versions of the concept, provided you accept that multiple users interacting with the same 'universe' at different times could qualify.
Anyway, enough of a history lesson for one day.

Contrary to what many long time MMORPG players think WoW expanded the MMORPG playerbase with almost 500% (I'll try to find that article again and link it).
Think a little about that number then go and read Vivendi Universals finansical report.
WoW singlehandedly saved that company from an absymal finansical year - all the usual money makers (music, movies etc.) in Vivendi had huge losses but because of the insane amount of money WoW had made the bottomline was green as a total for the huge company.
CCP, like it or not, cannot be anything but happy about WoW as it has expanded their potential customerbase with 500%.

Errr.. Americas Army isn't an MMO... Its a FPS that stores stats on their server.
Unless they came out with an MMO?

MMO=Massive Multiplayer Online, right? AAO is fps, but it is also multiplayer online. I played it almost 2 years and it was always multiplayer

Hmm. I dunno. I think most WoW emigres would only be transients.
From my dealings with the EVE community at large, I'd have to say CCP would probably have better luck courting advertisement in nerdier categories of S&M **** outlets.

People who say that death in other gams is not significant enough are just stupid. In games where you can die ten times and come right back death is not significant, yes, but does having to grind missions for a few days to replace the loss make death significant?
In Eve everything is much to easy to kill and destroy. People say death has more meaning in Eve, but quite frankly, that's a lie. Death has no more meaning in Eve then it does in WoW, because it happens a hundred times a day, every day of the year. In Eve death has absoloutly no meaning, since it's not even just easy to impale some elf in a nightgown, but to blow up and entire interstellar battleship...
Dreadnaughts are right now the only ship in Eve where its even still news if one is destroyed. Every other ship is blown up several dozen times every day, and nobody cares anymore, because death is not significant in the least - it's just more painful to the person getting killed...
So, if death is to have significance it has to occur less often, not be harsher on the person that's being killed. It's just like in real life, in real life you can't come back at all once you're dead, but if someone gets shot during peacetime it's in the news, and if someone gets shot during a war... well, if thei're lucky they might mention how many died that day...

They usually mean that the the consequences of dying are more significant in games like eve than in wow measured by the loss of equipment etc.
The game would boring pvp-wise, if everyone would die as rarely as in reallife. ___________ 'DISCLAIMER: All opinions in this post are provided "as is" and without any warranties.' |

They had open beta with very few bugs left in game and basicly let players get taste of mmorpgs even these who would normally not buy mmorpg tried the open beta and they also had created a lot of hype around wow which helped. Too many time mmorpg companies rush their product out unfinished and players lose intrest quick after.

hmmm well with all those players levelling out at 60 on WOW they are looking for alternatives - elite and space had an audience the only thing that gets some of them a little annoyed is the time based skill progression isntead of levelling but within a mnth they think its much ebtter for long term addictiveness

the best bit about eve is the time based training...
I hate games where some 14 yo with no life can get uber in a wekk by not sleeping. People with a life and a job cant compete
