I've only been playing for a few weeks, but I'm constantly reminded by veteran players how, like space, this game can be very dark, cold, and deadly. A comment I'd recently overheard about how out-of-pod capsuleers must feel like amputees (with all apologies to actual amputees) led me to conceive a way of introducing another added bit of "reality" to the game, something I call "capsuleer psychosis."
Forgive me if something similar has already been suggested, but basically what it would entail is that over time, capsuleers would begin to suffer mental disorders based on amount of time they spend in and out of pod, eventually growing more and more addicted to being in their pod and increasingly suffering from separation anxiety. How this would be put into practice is that over time (months at the least), and perhaps also depending on how much time a player spends in-game, your character's attributes would slowly begin to decrease. There may be other effects as well. To counter those effects, capsuleers would need to use drugs and expensive implants or boosters. There could even be missions where they must deal with various underworld factions to get the illicit items that are the only thing keeping them from going completely bonkers. This would of course place them in conflict with Concord, but there could be ways around this from becoming a tedious cycle of running from Concord all the time, as Concord would be aware of the effects of long-term pod use and would have protocols in place to deal with it. I'm not suggesting interventions and rehab for capsuleers, but maybe Concord would allow a small amount of illicit commodities into the market and turn a blind eye on capsuleers who buy them, as long as they maintain good standings. This would in turn affect the price of such commodities and turn Concord activities a shade of gray.
Anyway, that's the basic idea. I'm sure I haven't thought it all the way through, so please feel free to poke as many holes into it as you like. Remember, I'm just a rook. |

EVE is made cold & harsh by the players, you just want CCP to do it for you because you're lazy. The guy who was sitting next to me in the first nullsec round table who had obviously not had a shower since before boarding his flight to Iceland, you really stank. You know who you are. |

The main issue I can see with what you are suggesting is that older capsuleers will require progressively more maintenance, which means more ISK inflow required to simply keep the capsuleer functional. We already have people complaining about the price of clones: imagine how poorly they are going to think of the requirement to buy lots of drugs just to stay functional? I almost quit at 3 months of playing. I decided on the way out I would make someone else feel my pain. It felt pretty good. So I went after another, and then another. Now I'm just an a****** with a lot of spaceships and isk. ...but it's FUN and cheaper than therapy!

I'm sure this has been included in the lyrics of an Annihilator song. Braindance or something?
Also, like it's been said, forcing capsuleers to keep their stats from degrading (and spending isk to do so) may have a very negative impact on the playerbase.
Still, there should be some other use for all those drugs stashed next to the Damsel... This could be it :P |

Why invent some poorly simulated, symptomatically cliched, artificial psychosis?
Look at what capsuleers (and dusties) do (literally) every day and ignore the fact that there are players saying "it's just a game" behind those actions and tell me that there isn't already a psychosis associated with capsule-technologies... |

I would think that the psychosis would be more to do with the multiple deaths they have rather than the time spent in and out of pods.

Pretty much this. "Capsuleer Psychosis" seems like a pretty decent in-game explanation for our antics.
