I'm a noobie and I created my first char 2 days ago without any guidelines. Basically I just chose whatever that is more appealing, which is Minmatar Sebiestor with Rebel ancestors. But since I'm loving this game and planning to play it for a very long time, I just want to confirm I make the right choices, or I would restart immediately.
Basically I put 1 point into each attributes since I didnt know what each of them does... was it a mistake?
I'm looking to become a mostly fighter character, but a little bit of mining involved. Something like 75% fighting, 25% mining. I like fast ships, but I like taking down enemy fast even more. Also I heard probes are fun?...
Anyway the above are just personal preferences.. I'm not sure how close the available race are, but if someone can point to me the closest race to what I described above, it would be greatly appreicated!

Play what you like, only thing that matters is stats. In the end, you can fly minmatar ships as Amarr (ewwwwww...) or Gallente as Caldari, etc. As long as you have a good stat build for what you want to be, you could be a bowl of pudding and you'd still kick ass.

You did an okay job with your stats. The only thing that could really be done is move a point from charisma to perception. Still, you'll be fine as you are. That extra point in charisma will make learning the social skills that are nice for agent running.

After two days you can easily just reroll a character without any great loss (though it may seem otherwise at this point). Depending on what race you are, you may want to do this, as it's better to have balanced attributes (except Charisma).
If you're mainly fighting the consensus is as follows: Perc>Int>WP>Mem>>>>>>Char.
But you can get fairly balanced attribs with any race. So if you're not a big RPer, it doesn't matter. Most people pick whatever one sounds interesting from their descriptions, or whichever has the neatest ships, or the neatest portraits. Since you can learn to fly any ship, that shouldn't really be a major concern as long as you don't RP too much.

What skills does it take to be able to do this? And does it give any real advantages except for the looks of your ship?

All it requires is the race's skill for that ship ("Caldari Frigate" to fly a Kestrel, for instance). Just look at a ship's info, and it says what skills you need. These skills are freely available on the market. And the advantage is a boat load of versatility, being able to fly the ships of multiple races.
