I've been loitering in low sec for a few days. Sitting in a safe spot, scanning constantly, getting to know the neighbours. Prior to embarking on this little trip I had decided to only engage those that were causing other people trouble or had a negitive sec rating. I believed that this would be a good cause and would mean that I'm more than just another griefer running around with a gun.
Turns out that this is extremely boring. It's fine to grief the griefers in a quiet isolated 0.4 because there seem to be more stupid people in those who will hang around in a belt and mouth off in local. Low sec systems with links to other low sec systems aren't really like that, there's nobody there and any miners aren't stupid enough to hang around when they see my assault frig on sensors, so they're not going to wait around for anyone else to start harrassing them.
On this little quest for PvP experience, I jump on an unsuspecting cruiser out shooting rats in their undoubtedly newly aquired cruiser. I lock the sucker and my fingers hover over the webber and scrambler keys as the target blunders around collecting loot blissfully unaware of the danger they're in... but I let them go because I can't see the fun in doing that to someone. Those times I killed the idiots harrasing my freinds in an isolated 0.4 were great, they had a sporting chance and killing someone who I think deserved it felt great.
Killing someone that has no chance to fight back or escape, doesn't pose a threat to you or your allies, isn't a designated target for termination, isn't at war with you and isn't harrassing anyone else is just a pointless exhibition of power, and it's bad form. For that reason I've never considered attacking defenseless haulers and miners because I'd just be another griefer.
If I continue to follow this policy I'm going to be rather bored and my only opportunities for PvP will be eiher annoying some corp enough for them to war dec me, moving to 0.0 and/or becoming a griefer. The only 'wars' I've been involved in consisted of me and some corp mates camping the station of some poor sod around the clock for several days.
Should I just drop the whole thing and turn to the dark side? If so, how do you stop the VOICES!?!?!? __________________________________________________

If you don't feel like killing the unsuspecting / uninvolved, don't. Or you could give in to your _true_ desires and maybe try it.... You know, just once...

Edited by: Factor Benz on 22/11/2005 21:21:08 Let me speak to the 'VOICES' for just a moment...
Killing someone that has no chance to fight back or escape, etc., is not bad form nor is it griefing. Anyone in low sec or no sec space has consented to PvP. They have been warned about what lies through the looking glass and must accept the consequences of passing through.
You need to teach those voices to say F1, F2, F3, Irashi, no matter who is in your crosshairs. Be an aggressor - dictate where, when, and how an engagement proceeds. Grasp the Power of the Pirate, Irashi! Players in these dangerous areas want you to attack them!

Well, you don't HAVE to kill them.
Lock and scramble, then ransom. Most people will resort to pathetic smacktalk. As a result of this, you will immediately forget all your morals, get annoyed by their immature behaviour... and 'viola!'.. you have a good reason and genuine motivation to kill.
Of course, if they don't smacktalk and pay up, you carry on your merry business, and wish them a pleasant day.
I'm not actually a pirate, but thats how I would do it.

It really sounds like Piracy isn't for you man :)
If you think low-sec is boring, 0.0 is a *lot* more boring - unless you can fly an elite industrial and like getting chased by locals for 20 jumps.
Yeah, join a merc corp - that way you get kills and 'morality'

i suggest getting loaded on lots & LOTS of beer, and trying again.
You will find that these strange moral things, and doubts will go away. Also local chat will become a lot more interesting.
Drunk in control of a BS, only way to fly man!

Move to 0.0 and die a lot. That was my way to spare time empire terrorism.

0.0 is a lot more fun than low-sec, anyways. Just join a corp with a well-established KOS list, or make your own (if you want to continue with the "I only shoot bad guys" theme, just hang out in a gateway system like PF-346 for a while - you'll see loads of people you can apply the "bad guy" label to).

0.0 is great fun. Fly right into an alliance hub and see how many people ignore you and keep mining.

This still amazes me. People use the mechanics given to them in the game, obvious ones. Not using some lame exploit or bug to kill people, and they are still called greifers. I've always understood a greifer using an obvious flaw to harass people, and I dont see that in attacking people at belts, planets, gates, whatever. A more apropriate word is pirate. As these kind folks are using the game to their advantage. Anyone in low sec space is taking a risk, not being griefed.

Bah. Attacking miners doesn't make you a griefer - and that's a bit of an immature attitude to the game dynamics. As others said, those who mine in low sec space are aware of the risks. As a career (and RP even) pirate, I attack the ships that I think a) I can beat, cos I don't like dying, no matter how much it happens to me, and b) the ships I think will yield some isk.
Calling someone a griefer is precisely equal to calling someone a carebear.
