I fly around in an osprey wich I basicly use for mining. I can handle 0.7 rats fine with just 1 launcher and piranahs.
Now I moved to a nice 0.6 system though (got loads of my rocks and noone is ever around.
I have 2 ships there, merling and the osprey. I tried taking out the belt rats, but was easily punished to death by them.
I used 2 launchers with piranahs and two small hybrids with antimatter and iron rounds a civillian shield booster and some 100mm plates.
I was told with this setup 0.6 rats should be fine (Im using it because I just have the minimum skills for combat)
and that I didnt need to train any combat skills/defensive skills to handle the rats in an osprey.
Is it my setup thats to bad, or is it my piloting?
5 of them bloods (dont remember name but got 5K to 10K bounty on them) tear me up and close in on me before i can say "Boo!"
any suggestions on how to improve my chance at clearing the soawn so I can mine there? without dumping too much time into combat skills?

dont use a plates and a civillian shield booster. Get a small shield booster, and drop the plates for power diagnostics. Then try fitting heavy electron blasters along with heavy missiles launchers.

so basicly I need a combat trained character to do it then. thanks =)
WOnder what the other guys were thinking saying my current setup woould do just fine =/

Bloods gonna do em dmg, wich is ur weakest, so maybe a passive EM shield hardner?
99% of the above is said in RP. The Other 1% is personal, and should be taken that way. :P

I can mine easily in .5 with an Osprey, and my setup is similar to yours:
Highs
3 miner 2's
1 assault missile launcher (best named that I looted)
Mids
10mn AB
either a small or medium SB (can't remember)
Rock scanner
either a hardener or extender (can't remember)
Lows
3 CPU's
Load some medium drones for self protection as well.
Relevant skills that help with missiles:
Missile Launcher 5 (3 or 4 works)
Standard Missiles 3
Guided Missile Precision 4 (2 or 3 works)
Target Navigation Prediction 4 (3 works)
Missile Bombardment 3
Missile Projection 3
Rapid Launch 2
Warhead Upgrades 3
You can have most of these skills in about a week, but it can be done with alot less. My side skills are pretty good though, so I am sure that helps as well.
I didn't start mining until I had an Osprey, and once I got it I was able to do .5 no problem. My skills have upgraded over time (mostly combat) so it is easier now.

If I understood you correctly you want to use your osprey to mine in 0.5 systems?
Its really very very simple, think about it... You have a cruiser, all rats are frigates
4 med drones (hammerhead) to kill the rats with
high: 3x Miner-2, last slot empty (or what ever you can fit)
med: ore scanner, cap recharger, really not important
low: 1600mm steel plate (cheapest), 2x small armor rep
Armor tank is only way to go really, since mining lasers eat up your CPU. 1600 should tank long enough for your drones to kill them, (if they even break your shield), after rats are gone just repair using armor reps.
