Why is it every time I try to start-up EVE or enter this board it shuts my comoputer down, this as of today... It's utterly useless now to me and if not fixed in a few days cancelled.

I have had this problem too, on BOTH of my computers. One of the computers can't even start up now without crashing with the "unexpected remote call proceedure termination". Any advise anyone?

Edited by: JAXX on 11/08/2003 22:24:57 It's because you didn't Download the patch to security bulliten MS03-026 and you've been hit by the worldwide attack today. Here's the solution for you windows XP users.
1. unplug broadband connection -restart computer 2. enable XPs personal firewall 2a click start, control panel 2b click network connections, then dbl click Local area connection (LAC) 2c then choose the advanced tab in your LAC settings and check the little box to enable firewall. 3. Reconnect broadband connection. 4 Download & install the patch from link below

Oh look it wasn't Eve's fault at all. It was people running broadband connections with their asses hanging out (no firewall/router perchance?).
Still all is well now.

Could be a new viral worm that was found starting 11th August: "Blaster" (W32.Blaster.Worm)
"Windows must now restart because the remote procedure call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly"

Kraye with some training you'd be a good security man. Skills can be learned but instincts are inborn ,-)
The worm you hunted up actually uses the RPC exploit as its way in - so it's sorta the other way around. Plug the hole, worm can't get you.
If you recently plugged the hole, scan the bejesus out of your system; you may already have it.
It's bloody un-subtle, so check your task list for msblast.exe and if you see it, terminate the process! Then turn off Windows Restore. Then patch at windowsupdate, then clean your system.
Wheee!
And people say Linux is too complicated?

If you have been infected somone has had complete control of your system recently. The person in control may have placed many agents in your system that you might not find.
Do a scan with the most recent version of a virus scanner of your choise. Also look for small ftp servers running and cmd.exe processes that you have not started yourself.
Take a look in the administrators user group and the list of local users, if you see users not created by you then they might have been created as backdoors on your system.
Good luck! _________________________________________________________

Problem is how do I shut down processes when that window shuts down faster than I can open it...
Almost funny too how it only ever acts up when around EVE and you're saying it's not related.

I found that if you use IE for a certain period of time the problem arises too, so don't just blame EVE.
Personally I didn't have the msblast.exe and could not find any trace of a virus, but enabling the windows XP firewall prevented any more shutdowns. If you unplug your broadband modem from your PC (before booting up), it seems that the worm does not work, giving you time to enable the firewall. |

remember kidz, it's important to find this worm before August 16th. Symantec's site indicates that it will go active then, and your zombied box will be performing a DoS attack on microsoft at that time - leading to loss of bandwidth and CPU and machine control *at best,* possibly getting your butt kicked off your ISP. Take this seriously.

Quote: Problem is how do I shut down processes when that window shuts down faster than I can open it...[/quote Ctrl+Alt+Del, Task Manager, Processes, then find the task named "msblast" (despite the name it's definately not from MS) and hit "End Process". This will stop the worm crashing your system long enough to turn on the XP firewall (see above) and then download the various patches above (must turn on firewall BEFORE connecting to the internet). Note that if you reboot your machine without running any of the patches, you'll need to kill the worm all over again. This one's really tedious... let's be careful out there people.

(Hopefully without getting into a 'My firewall's better than yours' arguement) www.zonelabs.com offer a free firewall. There are others too, but that's the one I've got and I've not had any problems with it.

reson why it restarts all the time is because RPC service crashes, if you edit the properties on that service you can change the actions taken in case of crash .. now you can start scanning your computer OR getting that fix
