GW2 is a pile of crap thanks to game changes as well as the company's drive to make more cash via it's in-game shop. So no EVE does not need to be F2P, F2P will only ruin it.

Otherwise they involve a shop and try to encourage you to use the shop. Games like GW2 are free of subscriptions but they try to encourage you to use the shop by making it more difficult to gain in-game currency. Plus you have to buy the original game and any major expansions. So to recap there's no such thing as a free ride unless it's limited for the sole purpose to keep the numbers up and the hope you will subscribe to the full version.
