Are they only in stations with R&D agents or can they be found somewhere else?

Okay, let's see if I can get through this without a power outage this time...
No, R&D agents have nothing to do with the labs. Go to the map, and go to the Display Settings for stars. Go down to the station services section, and choose the "Laboratory" option. All systems with at least one station with research facilities will show up as red. You can hover over the system name to see the name of the station or stations with the labs.
Note that the labs in secure space tend to be quite expensive (over 100-150k), while lower-security space tends to have labs that are cheaper (1-10k) and more available (it can be hard to get a lab in high-sec).

Thanks! I was a bit worried because the research facilities I found which had also R&D agents were all used up.

Also you don't even need to go into low security space to get cheaper research. I believe the price fluctuates based on whether or not all of the slots are rented in a cycle. If they all are, the price goes up, if they aren't then the price goes down. All you need to do is go a few jumps away from a main system (like Jita) and you can find lab slots for pretty cheap.

Edited by: GC13 on 28/11/2005 17:55:18 The system doesn't need to be crowded to fill up the lab slots. Trust me on this. Low-sec space tends to be much less crowded (and people far less willing to travel several jumps into them to set labs, etc...) than 0.5 and up, so the prices stay lower.

True, just scout it out before you take any BPOs so that you don't get popped by a gank squad and lose them.

I guess that lab cost depends on both sec of system and how filled it is. Or maybe some other unknown factor :-).
I checked 2 labs, one cost 200k+ other 400k+ and both were filled (think they were even in same system). Found another lab which had free slots and cost were 200k+ (think it had a lower sec than tghe other labs)
What is a fair price for renting a lab?
Another question can you do both scientif research for NPC mission and researching a BPO at same time?

A fair price in a crowded area? Shoot for under 150k, but under 200k is fine. In a less-crowded area? Under 20k? Under 10k? Think LOW.

How far out would that be? And in low-sec space I guess?

Actually, I just found a 0.4 system that is very near my hub and is the first jump into low-sec, that is under 2k/lab. So really, it's not hard at all to find cheap labs.
