I apologize in advance that this must be the mother of all frequently asked questions, but eve search didn't turn up anything...
As a Caldari, what is a good ore type to be shooting for? I'm currently operating in 0.5 space with an Osprey/Badger combination. Up to now, I've been mining pyroxeres, but finding it pretty slow going. (A Badger's full of pyroxeres seems to get me about 300k including bounties on the pirates I kill along the way.) I've read about others mining Omber and Kernite, but have had no luck finding it in 0.5-space or above.
Any thoughts?

You should really move out of Caldari space, and then you can find Kernite and Omber, which are much better than what you are finding now. I would suggest Gallente space because it is pretty close to Caldari space, and you can find a good system near Ours and sell your minerals there. Jita to Ours is about 13 jumps or so off the top of my head.

Thanks for the reply! Wow, it never occured to me that that might be possible. Won't I have trouble finding agents who will talk with me in Gallente space?

Nope, Connections skill is your friend.

And if you've done Caldari missions you might have lost _some_ standing with the Gallente Faction, but it really takes a lot of effort to lose a significant amount of standing so that the Gallentes will really not like you. For now even a single level or two in connections can raise your standing to use most level 1 agents .

To save me making a thread... what kind of ship setup do you have to kill any rats attacking you while you mine? I heard people use drones to guard them, but I'm not entirely sure about that. I have an exequror to mine btw.

I mean, do they defend you automatically after you deploy them? Or do you have to lock onto the enemy and send the drones at them yourself? Sorry, no real experience in combat yet.. :S

Also another idea is to keep the drones handy, but to just tank the damage (this is what people do in 0.0 mining) and it isn't a bad idea here either. It depends on the security status of the system you are in but I think it might become a bigger deal after the NPCs become harder post RMR. The basic idea is that the belt rats will not respawn if you leave them alone, and if you kill all but one, the same kind of spawn will come back over and over. Why this is useful is because if you find a spawn thats pretty easy in a lower sec system, it would be advantageous to mine there and just tank the easy spawn, as opposed to killing it off and potentially getting something worse. The downside to this is that if a pirate shows up (and you are in low sec) you will have to deal with the pirate's damage and the NPC's damage...

The drones will sometimes attack automatically but will often split and not concentrate fire. You are better locking and attacking. Check us out

Amarr space is full of Kernite. Kernite has isogen. Isogen is fun to sell...
Kernite shows up in .8 space at the highest. Never seen it in .9 or 1.0...and I've never seen it above .4 in Caldari space.

Yes, I have been checking out a lot of belts in Caldari space and never find anything other than the 4 most common ores. I found Kernite in a 0.4 system (but only one of 3 belts had it) but it had some harder NPCs to kill (cruiser or BS Gurrista).
Time to go either to Amarr or Gallente. Amarr might be a better choice for me since my main char is Caldari and my alt is Amarr. Any good trad ehubs in or near Amarr space?

I mine exclusively in Amarr space, its great.
There are loads of 0.5-0.7 systems with Kernite, far too many to count. Also plenty of empty (ie safer) lowsec systems.
Amarr space is a lot less busy than either Caldari or Gallente space, meaning you have less hassle from ore thieves, and less competition from other players, and less macrominers.
I personally sell my minerals in Tash-Murkon Prime, though there are a few other trade hubs. If you want to squeeze all the ISK you can from your minerals, then Jita is only about 12 jumps from TM Prime.

if you want omber which has isogen as its main component a very good place to find it is in minmatar space. 0.8 to 0.5 has plenty (gold and sliver omber too).

This is good information. My buddy and I traveled to Faurent to mine, and discovered nothing better than scordite and veldspar. Seems the strip miners had preceded us. Over all, we need to find a place that's relatively quiet so that there is something left over for us newbs.

Just because I'm a jackass, I should note that if he's Caldari, he'll probably need Diplomacy to use Gallente agents since he will most likely have a negative faction standing. Unless of course, you want to start with the worst quality level 1 agents and work your up. You should have access to those without any skills. Then you can learn Connections when you get a positive standing with a corp. So either way works I guess .

Me and 2 friends have been playing about a month, and we all started gallente. We mine mostly omber in a backwater system, there are only few people usually in local and they're "uber" characters who don't usually mine that much.
On the weekends, there is never much omber to be had, but come monday ore tuesday, you can usually find about 80K units of various grades of omber in a few belts.
It's a 0.7 system so we mine with 2 catalyst destroyers and a cruiser. The cruisers drone's kill all the rats easily, but we can defend ourselves with just the catalysts having 1 gun each and 2 light drones.
We typically fill a jet can with all three of us mining, then one person switches to hauling out the jet can once it's about 80% full and then we mine with the hauler in space until we decide to call it a night. Seems to be good for about 4 mill/hr with 88.75% refinining efficiency.
But come susnday night, you're lucky to even find plagioclase in the belts as everyone has been playing all weekend, so you really shouldn't scope out systems during the weekend.
It's handy because the Uber characters chase out macro miners out of principle and they're a great source of info and tips. But we got lucky and founded our corp in a system with compassionate characters.

It is also quite handy to note that you can afk mine kernite in a hauler in kor-azor prime (0.9), though that might be a bit distant for you. I used to do that in my noob days, lock a roid, set off a miners, go out for a few hours and come back.
Unfortunetly, it appears that there are all to many people doing this now :) But you can AFK mine scordite in a while you watch a movie or whatever. Remember to avoid 0.8 and below, since they have rats that spawn in on you! --- Order Now!
