has anyone thought of any ? it can shield tank very good and still get cargohold expanders, so imho its the best t2 indy. Hi - med nos ( dont know really on hi, maybe cloak instead) Med - kinetic t2 hardener, all type hardener, med shield booster Lo- cargohold expanders
what do you think about it ?

Its class is the worse class of T2 industrial. Unless it actually can haul more than its T1 counterpart which I have not investigated. I think it does have 1 more low slow but starts out with less capacity. Actually, that still is not enough due to the high price.
Its DOG slow. Its not a combat vessel, so if its in a fight for any length of time, no amount of hardning short of combat level hardening will save it. Either your a combat vessel and you fight, or your not and you run. This one just can't run...
Not to mention its large size makes it susceptible to bumping.
If you need heavy hauling get a mammoth or Fenrir. If you need to pass through hostile territory get a Prowler. Mastodon is useless.
Good try though CCP; can't win em all. ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

Mastodon has better cargohold capacity, so which transport ships do you prefer ?

Hi- Proto Cloaker Mid - 10mn T2 AB; Large T2 Shield Booster, EM Shield hardener (passive) Low - 2x wcs; 2x expanders
The mastodon is a mammoth on steroids shield/armor wise, so it is far from useless. Prowler doesn't have the hold and a Fenir? lol got a spare 1.5bil laying around?

Well, i once wondered the same thing cos i wanted to give one a try. What i ended up doing was tanking both shields and armor:
hi- One day i'll fit something here, atm it's for display mostly mid- ab, shield booster, medium shield extender low- 2xwcs, passive non energized kinetic hardener, active exp hardener, nanofiber
The idea was to have a ship that could endure for a brief time any attack to get away. And it does resit. A short range temp once "helped" me test it, and it never went beyond shield, but it has quite a few drawbacks that turn me off when using it. 1st is speed. When info about ship says it's one of the slowest ships around of it's class, they weren't lying. Plus it's not a blockade runner, so no bonuses for built-in wcs.
Only thing going for you is the extra cargo space, and without expanders max you'll get is 6562.5m3. Try fit an expander, and the ship's poor agility gets even more gimped. In fact, i would like the mastodon a lot if it could fit the gear for a control tower easily, but without expanders, most stuff won't be possible to carry, and that is one by one the major part. I'll probably fit dmg control instead of nanofiber after patch, but as it has been suggested, prowler does the job much better. These ships are not really meant for bulk cargo anyways ________________________________________

so which t2 indy is best for tanking & cargohold capacity ?

and why is mastodon the slowest t2 indy ? it has best speed combined with less low slots

Like I suggested, Mastodon starts out with less cargo capacity than Mammoth, but one additional low slow.
The resistance is just a novelty, if you actually have to use it your probably dead since it cant run and it warps sooo slowly. Even if you make it Prowleresque with 4xwcs and 1xnanofiber in low, its still susceptible to bumping.
Prowler is the 8hiznit. Close to the agility of a Stabber, resonable resistance, and +2 wcs built in. The Prowler is far and away above the Mastodon.
Mastodon is good for one thing however. Empire mining operations where all you care about is cargo size. Calling it 'deep space' is a marketing ploy. ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

I had a Mastodon. I sold it. Reasonable solid ship but it didn't cut it for me.
I now use a Prowler. Lower cargo but faster and although this is conjecture, I have survived close encounters with bad peeps because of its fittings and speed where I believe I might not have in a Mastodon.
My concept for a non T1 cargo ship is surviverbility in low(er) sec space and the Prowler does it for me.

is a good industrial, the tank could be very useful, for example in 0.0 mining operations.
i flew a fully tanked one out into the free for all zone on the test server, and it tanked an Ishtar with little problem.
i've heard stories of these things trundling towards a gate, and tanking a gate camp. though overall personally i prefer the Prowler. |

Let's face it, the peeps who are running supplies across gate camps shouldn't be doing it in a mastodon. I have a mate with transport ships 5 though, and let me tell you, that thing can tank a lot of damage with just a medium tech 2 booster and a shield boost amp. Admittedly the bumping is a major issue, and actually cost him one...but for hauling from belt to station, it is a great choice because you can get a huge load of crap in there, and not have to take away a low slot to have a tank (like the occator) Plus it is cheaper. Is it the best t2 industrial? No, not by any means...but it is not the big POS some folks are making it out to be.

As Scotty would say on Star Trek "you need the right tool for the right job"...so if you have a mastadon...get a prowler too...there is no substitute for a t2 cloak in the top slot!!. always always always!!!...any gate cmpers will have to be good pilots to get you to de cloak but they are out there so you have to be on the ball if you are hualing in low sec space...the trick is to not become complacent because its easy to get away with it in a masta...good ship ignore what the others say

Agreed, except I switch the shield hardener for a cap recharger and use nanos instead of expanders.
But either is good depending on the job you want it to do. I have tanked fair sized gate camps in it, on my appraoch to the gate. I should've ran the shield booster to drop cap then warped to a SS but I didn't think of that (noob) and was killed on my approach to a station. My skills were very poor then though, now I'm sure I could've made it.
There are many uses for a fully tank equipped Mastodon, although running gatecamps isn't the main one.

I love my mastadon. I fly a prowler also. Granted I ussually have at least system intel on the gates I'm jumping through. But I never think twice about going into a system with as many as 4 hostiles that have been terrorizing the area. In fact I enjoy laughing at them while I sit there and tank the damage. I have on many occasions done this. I also challenge all of my corp mates to take me to armor. They can eventually but I would of been long gone before they did that even at the slow aligning speed.
I spent a few hours moving mins across 7 jumps. The prat in one of the systems eventually even stopped trying to shoot at me and had a convo with me. It was pointless for him to try.
The prowler can run through gates better but it just can't take the damage.
High - nos med - med shield booster two, knetic hardner, and ab low - 3 wcs (unless I have a pretty good idea its clear and I use 2), cargo expanders or nano's depending on what I'm moving.
It is not the piece of **** that others say it is. Plus its great ganker bait if you have a scrambler on :)
