Hey guys,
I was just flying around space today with the boys and after they told me about what they used to do with mines in the old days my military mind kicked in with an idea for a sort of claymore. The idea I had was for a User Operated Anti Ship Mine.
Plans for a User Operated Anti Ship Mine
- Launcher usable only on Covert Ops ships (Because of the CPU requirements of the launcher) - Require a few seconds to anchor. (Meaning only useable in 0.4 or below) - Require a person to be with in 100km. (Cloaked or uncloaked) - If the person warps away the mines deactive's and blows up after an hour. - A little larger in m3 then the Scan Probes. - Deal 4 different types of damage with a possible damage increase for specific raced ships. (Eg, Hound 5% per level to explosive damage) - Can not be anchored with in 5km of a station or a stargate. - Max number of mines deployed at any one time 5 with them capable of taking down a ship if setup correctly. - Most important undetectable to everyone else or if this is possible only detectable to other Covert Ops ships. - It could mean a new ship class called the Mine Layers.
Purpose of a User Operated Anti Ship Mine
Mainly, to set up traps..
- Setup a few mines around a gate for pesky campers. - Setup a few at a point where a sniper keeps warping in. - Setup a few in a belt where your enemy mines or hunts npc. - Setup several mines in a location where you think the enemy fleet will wonder into. Damaging them before your fleet warps in.
The User Operated Anti Ship Mine would give Covert Ops pilots another way to be ninja like in their behaviour.
Covert Ops users would be able to:
- Bust spots using Scan Probes - Set up warp in points for your fleet - Setup traps for those characters that keep jumping between places - And much more..
Anyways, it's a idea.. crazy idea but I love being ninja like and evil. - Evil

Yeah, but they already can - warp in points are nasty. :) Mines are interesting, if they didn't cause so much lag I wouldn't mind seeing some back - I never have seen them used in game myself. That was just a little bit before my time.

I don't think the lag would be much greater then using smart bombs in battle, split second activation and thats it.
Yeah, I still actually can remember mines but I never actually ended up finding any launchers to use them. :(

Edited by: Samuel Baxter on 30/11/2005 05:27:20 Interesting idea, but I agree the lag might be a standing issue with this concept.
I have two considerations that I jotted down regarding your idea for mines:
1. A high[er] anchoring skill, or specific skillset that requires a high amount of training. (This would prevent n00bs from suddenly mining entire asteroid belts for fun.)
2. The amount of mines that can be deployed by one player is limited (rather like drones).
And there might be some problems with indiscriminate targeting of ships due to these mines. I know, for one, that I would be most irate if I was in an asteroid field and suddenly had a rather large hole punched in my indy, when the mine was intended for a frigate operated by someone else.
So make it so that the mine, when activated, could only be set to go off against a specific ship type (i.e. Gallente frigate, Amarrian freighter, etc.). __________
Yeah, that's a real gun in that gun rack. No, I don't have a permit for it; you got a permit to ask stupid questions like that? |

And how are mines any worse then the 50 billion achored cans sitting around? A mine is simply a can that blows up when something gets near it, and then it's gone, unlike cans, which sit there....forever....and ever.... and ever...

All new features will in some way bring lag (extra stress on servers) to the game. So that argument won't cut it with such a nice example. I like the idea of being able to actually ambush someone with a cool minefield. You could give them a max amount of time they can be in space, like 2h or something, then you won't bring alot of lag to the game, and the refresh time for them to the server could be lowered also to avoid the lag issues. But it's a well throughtout idea indeed, just needs to be tweaked to cope with the lag it would cause in the end. A way to reduce it to almost nothing should be possible.

Put a limit on the number that can be deployed in a system.
Make them visually detectable but no overveiw help or icons on the HUD or anything like that.
I would up the time the live after a warp out to 6 hours. 1 hour goes by way to fast in this game.
Deployable anyware in 0.0, Bit not alowed at gates and stations in .1 and up.
Give them very simple bitmaps and polygons to help reduce the gfx lag that having alot of anthing can cause.
Give them classes, Anti BS mines work well on a BS but somthing smaller wont set them off. An Anti frig mine works well on frigs but doesnt do near enough damage to take down a BS.

Great military application but sadly I think it would be used as a griefing tool. I can just imagine a belt of the things (4 would do) around gates to catch passing pilots. They gate in and boom! Gone! Not too much fun for the poor victim though a hoot for the minelayer I suppose.

i would love to see mines back in the game, what do you propose on the impact on your secrating using them ? e.g. if a mine hits a non-wartarget in empire

Im not entirely sure if they were removed because of lag, It seemed more likely because of the aggresion effect etc.. in high sec space and at sentried gates.
But they were great fun on 15k warp in for killing capsules, Anything larger than a capsule could make it through any way cos the mines did such **** poor damage.

Limit the number of deployable mines from one ship (a specialised ship not any ship) and make them so that a full hit from all the mines won't kill a bs/cruiser/frig (depending on the mines) cose otherwise a minelaing ship will be uber..killing a designated target in one go.. this should work in gangs only if they want to insta kill anything... I love the idea of mine.. so cool:)) |

P.s. Mines don't necessarily cause lag unless they're badly coded. - Proud member of the [23].

I thought my idea had died it disappeared into the abys of the forums so quickly. I'm happy some other people read it..

There would have to be restrictions on how far away you could anchor a User Operated Anti Ship mine just like there are restrictions on activating smart bombs, anchoring warp bubbles or secure containers.
Mine should not being allowed with in 5000 meters of a Star Gate or a Station the same as the above example.

Well, using a User Operated Anti Ship Mine on a non-wartarget in empire (0.4 <-> 0.1) would result in the same aggression timer and effect as you would get if you shot at someone.

Yep, there would have to be a limit on the amount of mines deployed at one time and the graphics would have to be pretty simple do make them effective in large scale battles.
I think a well placed mine of a certain class should be able to do a wrecking hit but not be able to kill on its own but two or more well placed mines should be able to. (Team of ninja Cov Ops 4TW kind of like the stealth bombers)
The idea of actually having different sized mines for different ship classes is a brilliant idea. It could allow different levels of mine layers with different abilities against small, medium, large ships and extra large ships.

Seriouly, dude I bet you could have come up with something a lot more constructive then that. To be honest I'd agree to no graphics as long as I could have something like a User Controlled Anti Ship mine in EVE on my Covert Ops or on a new fancy mine layer.
Anyways, thanks for all the comments guys. Keep em coming and someone from CCP might take a peak and see if it's actually a feasible idea. :) - Evil

Nice idea ...
It wonŠt be usable in high sec empire , so the danger for your industrial will be mainly reduced unless you jump into low sec / 0.0 belts with an industrial without protection.
I would see this mines more as protection against following interceptors , or as a trap for frigs maybe cruisers (with more than one cloaker)
Imagine you have been spotted in your ship and warp to a planet , there you deploy your mines and warp off . The interceptor/frig warps in on you and goes BOOM ..
You escape.
my 2 cents

Haha! I remember it was such a long time ago when CCP even said they were looking at bringing mines back, let alone when they were actually in game!
I'd love to see mines back. But to avoid database lag they should work vs everyone, not only vs bad standings or neutrals. And to avoid performance lag they shouldn't be individual mines that are launched, rather one 'minefield' of which the strength can be increased by launching more mines within 20km of it.
And yeah, the mines should be split into small, medium, and large - then further split into the 4 damage types. -omg-

Yes, I could, but I won't waste my time on symantics when most of it gets lost on the forum-go'ers anyway. My post was concise, to the point, and very easy to understand. Mines will beget lag, lag is a major issue, therefore, there will be no mines.
