Edited by: LUKEC on 02/12/2005 16:01:20 I had this incident today... i was happily orbiting tempest at 12km without mwd in inty... and transve rsal speed was ~400m/s and did not drop...
All of sudden... bang, podmobile :)
I checked the mail... 1400mm artys :) It happened 2d ago to my friend, but it was tahyons on geddon.

Wasn't that changed? Back in the days there was a fixed % chance... but it was said to be changed.

Just because people like to insist large turrets can never hit up close, in these missile-related threads... doesn't really mean these stories are all that accurate -.^

Its all about percentages, at that speed and distance/transverse Velocity the perentage chance is like 0.0001% or something rediculous, so eventualy you will get hit. So as said, bad luck for you, good luck for the Tempest pilot.

time to fix tracking formulas without probablilites... because this is ridiculous
Edit: why it never happen to my blasters?

I think that's how it work.
In general, you'd have: (base damage) * (tracking/falloff related damage reduction) * (hit type)
But for a wrecking, you'd have: (base damage) * 1 * (hit type) ... with (hit type) being 3.
And as the tracking/falloff statistic law is a bell-shaped curve, it is never exactly 0 and hence eventually you'll have a wrecking here and there, even though most shots before and after the wrecking miss.
I'd hope to be wrong though

This is also why plates/extenders are so nice, they safe you from unfortunate 'accidents'
You need number of factors though to be this unlucky..
- You need that luck shot to begin with
- You need that luck shot to be good shot (excellent/wrecking)
- Lastly you need a high damage mod gun, preferably 1400/tachyons or the target need to be some real paper ship..

Also keep in mind that high damage mod equals high rof, futher decreasing the chance of this happening.
Wether this lottery should stay or not I shall not say. Though I do think 'perfect' games are dull and have much less live time than games with some interesting quirks.

Looking at a video where a single webbed Taranis at 5km gets hit repeatedly by a pulse Apoca'. The Taranis speed is 95 m/s, and is going at an angle that'll optimize transversal velocity, so at that range, speed, and size of target, the Apoc' shouldn't hit at all instead of a 10% hit ration.
There might be something in that vid I don't know about, but it looks a bit odd. (No, can't share vid yet, it's for internal review only)
So. When are these forums going live in game? |

it is not fun when that happens. End of discussion. Else i'd like to pod someone with blasters at 80km.

I saw an unwebbed raptor get hit by a quad 3500 at 2k yesterday, transversal was well above 3k...
Crazy stuff happens.

....
# The damage done by a 'normal hit' is no longer 100% damage every time but now simply any hit that does between 75% and 100% damage. The full range remains as it always was, 50% to 150%.
# Wrecking hits (300% damage) have been altered so that they no longer occur simply one in every hundred shots, but rather one in every hundred shots that are already a hit. This change is already on Chaos and will be out with the next Tranquility update.
# Orbit functionality has been improved significantly and is more tactically viable. This is also already on Chaos and will be out with the next Tranquility update. ....
I bothered my self to show u that actually one in so many hits that are actually hits can be a wrecking.
The only reason i can see for a 1400 hiting a ceptor is if ceptor was changing orbit and somehow reduced his transvesal for a moment and with the mwd going the pest got a hit witch was a wrecking hit in this case.
It has hapened to me to have 2 wrecking hits on the first salvo. it pure luck but the chance is there to make this game as wonderfull as it is.

We were doing some combat testing with my corp sometime ago and I did lose my Ishkur the same way to a 1400mm arty of my corp mate. I was orbiting him with an AB @ 10km and he decided to activate his guns, the second shot blew me up.
Wreaking shots MUST be changed to 1 in 100 HITTING shots, opposed to the 1 in 100 shots, which totally ignore tracking, transversal and sig radius.

well, I've always been for reverting back to before guns had tracking, so my gun that costs more than your ship could hit you outright everytime

Edited by: Imhotep Khem on 02/12/2005 18:56:30 Maybe he was heavily trackin boosted and you were heavily painted?
I have to say though that my experience leads me to same conclusion. When I luck up and get a hit on a frigate its almost always a wrecking shot.
MWD makes frigates harder to hit, not easier. Sig penalty is like 400-500%? but speed boos is like 1000% IIRC. at least I seem to get up to 4000m/s in my minmatar frigates.
Also, are you sure the 1400 that killed you was from the ship you were orbiting? ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

If it's not a wrecking shot then it's pretty weird tbh. The thing with wrecking is, although they were fixed some time back so that you get 1/100 chance of a wrecking per hit instead of per shot, "glances off causing no real damage" still counts as a hit as far as I know. Even though it does no actual damage, you still get the 1/100 chance of a wrecking.
That's my take on things anyway, until a dev tells me otherwise.

Was shooting a can at 20K with ion blasters on my Deimos (for video purposes)... and then it popped to a wrecking of some ~700 hp hit.

Hit type distribution was tested long ago and concluded to be flat. So improved tracking will not change the ration of barely scratches to well aimed hits. It only affects the ration of misses to hits overall.
During this time, misses of the glances off type were not calculated in as hits. Its possible that the glances off type should have been counted in the flat distribution though. ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

i can confirm that wrecking hits do happen in situations when you normally dont have any chance of hitting the target. did it myself with all kind of guns. the chance is quite low though.

I was once warping around in my Mega trying to escape an enemy gank fleet. I exit warp at a planet and an interceptor exits warp 20km from me. I lock him by the time he is at 10km since I had sensor boosting, and hit all my guns to shoot. He exploded instantly. I got him with some lucky blaster shots, which normally never hit interceptors that close. He died around 7 or 8km from me from some 300-400 hits. It was one of the funniest things that ever happened. Mainly because I imagine what he was thinking when it happened... "Im gonna get him, we are gonna gank Russo.....boom....WTF?!!!??!?!?!"
