For those that dont know, its just like the tar stuff builders use to fill gaps in roads but in a jar, smells like burnt wood - and you're expected to spread it on bread or toast and eat it with a big smile on your face.
Some people, (I would assume those with no taste buds) love it and can't get enough of it. Others like me find it vile and would prefer sucking on a lemon.
So who loves it and who hates it?

Never tried vegemite but marmite is ok. I haven't eaten it since some time 10 years ago or so though, so I'm hardly an addict.

I love marmite. I especially love marmite smeared thickly all over a rice cake :)))))))))))
Seriously, i go through a large jar of it every week....and that is me being restrained because it costs so much!

Oh, I forgot to add, I am not sure whether do I still have the habit of scooping a tablespoonful of marmite and lick it like a lollypop. Hmmmm... I think I may go get meself a tub of marmite soon.

Personnally I prefer Bovril to marmite, and never tried vegemite.
What I dont get is, Bovril is made with beef-extract, marmite with vegatable extract, so whats vegemite?

In order of preference: Promite, Marmite, Vegemite.
Theres nothing like getin' nude, covering yourself with Promite and rolling around in your ore after a hard days mining.
If you don't like the *mites Honey is an excellent substitute.

They are both the one of the most disgusting things I've ever had.
When I first got down here to New Zealand, I was offered Marmite, (I'd had vegemite from an aussie friend years ago in high school) and nearly puked again. They freakin put it on thier toast (with butter!).
Sometimes they melt chesse on top of Marmite or Vegemite though, and it kinda almost tastes decent hot with it. (Emphasis on ALMOST!)
Course down here they have no idea how good Penutbutter and Jelly is. (or Jam for them, jelly = jello down here.) So go figure.
Oh yeah and weetbix....talk about bland logs of wheat.
Whew anywho, no way jose. Won't ever eat Marmite or Vegemite again. It's like those disgusting alfalpha pills I took as a kid.

Bovril - bit over the top IMO
In South Africa there is/was another one like this, called Fray Bentos. This was indeed a beef extract though. After all the mad cow scares I think it was shelved (scuse the pun).

When i lived at home sometimes i used to get up in the mornings and go downstairs to find that the whole of it reeked to high hell of dead and rotting chicken flesh...and sure enough every time the culprit was a cup full of bovril sediment left to fester overnight by my dad. Bovril is disgusting in so many ways but i think the "old bovril" smell is the worst. If you "think" you love it, leave it overnight and smell it and see if you still say that!
EDIT: Fray Bentos pies suck. ú1.50 for one of those pieces of crap, or ú2 for a juicy steak and mushroom pie from Iceland that is twice the size? |

I never tried drinking it, which is what your suppose to do. I eat it like marmite, on toast or just stick my finger in it.
Do the iceland pies have the same kind of pastry? Its the gooey underbelly pastry that does it for me.

(On a side note, when I was at school and wanted a day off I used to eat a spoonful of Marmite which would make me hurl and secured sickie time, strange since I loved the stuff)
