I believe that container lag is an issue, don't get me wrong, but from a reality-check standpoint, pirates could easily place several containers outside a jumpgate and the ships exiting warp would find themselves cluttered by the debris and thus slowed down...
Of course, in that case, sentry guns could be set to target any cargo containers within 50k of a gate that are older than 5 minutes.
But then again, if we keep secure cargo contaners semi-indestructible they would never be able to shot down.
ARGH, my head hurts.
ps. Another thought... think about how much people will ***** once Alliances make sentry guns of their own

2 months from now, every stargate usually blockaded by pirates will be non-usable due to 1734 secure cargo containers around it. Great.

The sec container issue is a tough one, no doubt.
On the one hand, we need measures to secure our stuff from ore thieves etc., but on teh other, sec containers are easily exploitable as lag-generators or insta-jump warp points.
I know this idea has been on the air before, but how about making it impossible for others to open a container that is already open? This would surely cater for the power-miners, and hopefully remove the need for secure containers.

Also, one could limit access to open containers to gang or corp members. ________________________________________________

Idea!
Suppose someone has a pirate corp. camps a gate, brings allong 2 indy ships, puts inside 50 small security cans in each, blow them (the indy) in front of the gate, then they have 100 sec. cans floating around causing lag to incoming traffic? Anyone tried this?

Apologies if this has been said before, but how about fitting stargates with powerful tractor beams, then they could lock on to any can within a certain radius that's been there for more than, say, 15 minutes and suck it into the gate itself. Cans that don't belong to anybody could be destroyed but for those that do, there could be like a fine for dumping them and/or a fee to return them to their owners.
But mainly I just like the idea of stargates doubling up as giant space hoovers -------------------- "My dear, I'm going to have a pretty lonely walk between this and Kingdom Come. Won't you give me one kiss? It'll be something to keep off the darkness now and then."

This last idea is actually rather good.
Personally I have always thought you should be able to dock with gates, simply have gates pick up any debris withing say 20km of the gate if it has been floating longer than 2 hours.
If the container has an owner it becomes placed in lost and found, otherwise it is simply crushed. To get a container back you pay a fine based on the size of the container.
This could also be used for stations however the problem is not as bad there.

Actully i quite like the idea that someone had earlyer of concord turning up and grabbing crates which are near stargates as they are navigation hazards say 10 to 20 mins after the container was dropped.
If this was implemented you could have a "confiscation" guy in one of the concord stations who would sell the container back to you for retreval costs etc
You could also implement a fine system so that say after 10 crates are picked up from an individual by concord and not picked up from the depot then they will get fines X number of ISK (going up each set of fines) if this isnt paid then your security rating gets dropped for littering :) BSC, Chief Tactical Officer

You folx are missing a very important problem with this "Claim the Can in a station" idea..
1) Fill a canister with an expensive trade item 2) Jettison can by a gate 3) Wash, rinse repeat, build up 300 mil worth of stuff at the gate.. 4) wait for it to be confiscated 5) Go to a "claim point" close to your sell point, reclaim cans and sell your goods
WOW.. instant teleportation of unlimited amounts of goods.. great idea there, folx.
I have a better idea.. automatically destroy any containers within 100km of a stargate or station totaling more than about 20 cans... make it age-dependant so the older cans disappear first, whether or not they are secure.
If you lose a secure container that way, to friggin bad, it's your fault for jettisoning it there in the first place.
As for ore "theft", if you don't want it to happen, DON'T JETTISON YOUR CARGO.. jeez.

Edited by: Thaddius Engle on 13/08/2003 18:41:04 Has anyone seen any gates yet with so many secure containers that it really lagged you? I haven't had this happen yet, maybe I'm just lucky. I have, however, warped into 1.0 hub gates where pirates were camping for a while and been lagged for 30-40 seconds because of 100 concord and navy ships swarming around.
Let's get rid of concord because they're causing lag and therefore must be an exploit!!! |

Not an issue if you limit the claim point for cans dropped at a gate to stations that are in the same system as the gate itself. And if there are no stations, then every container could just get destroyed. -------------------- "My dear, I'm going to have a pretty lonely walk between this and Kingdom Come. Just make the damn things hackable, kay? Then some n00b can make isk hacking cans at gates and scooping them into his indy.

Edited by: Deadzone on 14/08/2003 08:08:40 Jash, the point of this entire thread was not hacking into cans, but pirates leaving hundreds of cans around a gate, making theperson jumpping to the gate, a dead duck due to loading lag.
20 mins should be the max time alloted to any can 40-60km from a gate, period. Then the guns or concord come and blast them. Prob wouldn't be too hard to fit that the only dmg a secure can can take is from NPC entities, like concord, sentry guns, etc Vice-Admiral

I had a thought that may be a bit silly and unconstructive, but how about the news screens near the gates regularly displaying a message "NO LITTERING"? Hey, the authorities will want to keep their spacelanes clean, after all!
The logical second thought was a concord fleet with a couple of indies and maybe a frigate or two, and with as their single purpose "collecting the trash". All you would need for them would be a security override for the containers (which would explain why and how the containers would be hackable as well!)
Besides solving a nagging problem, this might be a small way of further enriching the game. For example, how about issuing licences for picking up "old" secure containers? Besides bountyhunter, miner, pirate trader, producer, researcher, explorer, soldier, freighter or corporate official you would be able to proudly state your profession as a garbageman!

Erai, I like it!
Garbageman seems like an ideal career for an unemployed ore thief, of which there will be plenty once the miners wise up to secure containers
