Preferably Amarr ships...
I'm trying to skill up so as to be valuable to a null-sec PvP corp. I'd enjoy any role, just not sure what is most needed usually. |

Interdictor. I sing it's praises all the time.
No other ship is as ubiquitous in any given (null sec) fleet as the Dictor. Virtually no fleet undocks in null sec (except maybe Blops) without a Dictor or two. No other single ship makes as big of an impact on an engagement as the one that warp jammed the entire enemy fleet with one button.
Easy to train for, and for those looking to null sec, a better investment for training time than most of the T2 frigates. It's very rare that FC's prefer any frigate over a Dictor given the choice. Frigates (other than SB's in their snowflake role) are something an FC might call for if he already has enough Dictors in fleet.... Every skill needed to fly them enhances your PvP skills like Prop Jam V that you should have anyway.
Flying a Dictor makes great use of manual piloting, another thing every PvP'er should know. Get good with the D-Scan and you also become the fleet scout, operating ahead or behind the main fleet rather than just being in the herd being fleet warped around.
Many pilots ignore it as a role to really explore, but Dictors offer incredible depth if one doesn't just skip past them in favor of larger, shinier hulls. Being that you WILL die a lot in a Dictor, it is also very much a bro-role ship to fly. Losses are usually 100% reimbursed, and no one complains that your skills aren't all maxed given that you generally end up without implants in your noodle most of the time.
Professional grade tackle is a great fleet role to get into for anyone. Newbs are immediately useful, even vital, fleet members- and vets can really shine with manual piloting and operating independent of the main fleet. |

I mean Dictors specifically for general use and low SP pilots. HICs are much less common, far more expensive, and take huge amounts of time to really train for. The size of the bubble on a HIC depends on your HIC skill, a 6X skill. Meaning you have to max a racial cruiser AND the HIC skill to fully realize one. Most people just fly with HIC IV. The Dictor bubble is always the same size, regardless of Dictor skill. The Dictor skill itself doesn't even need to be maxed out as weapons are very much secondary to your bubble. Just flying it at III is very common. A fully fit, double bubble and cloak Sabre can run <70mil each while just the Onyx hull is over >200mil generally. HICs see their best use as capital tacklers and locking down stations.
If you like tackling, then certainly the HIC is a good ship to look into, but you will be much farther into PvP by the time you can fly one, and won't need my advice anymore by then. Any of the T2 cruisers really become the point at which pilots specialize, because training times run into a month or more for the first time. You can train most of the T2 frigates up in the time you'll spend just getting any T2 cruiser role fully realized. So by that point you may prefer to fly logi, or command ships, or some other role. Logi for example is much more common than HICs in null fleets.
Even tho I can fly much more 'advanced' ships, I love flying Sabres. It's free wheeling, manual piloting fun and I personally prefer to scout and operate ahead of the main fleet. If I'm late to a fleet and need to solo boat to the action, or just don't know what to bring, I default to my trusty Sabre- and no FC has ever been unhappy to see me (at least based on my ship selection, not my skill at Eve Online). |

Don't overlook training the anchoring skill so you can deploy mobile warp disruption bubbles. You could easily start off in an Augoror and keep some mobile warp disruptors in the cargo hold.

You get to fly your ship instead of anchoring on one guy and pressing f1 when he tells you
in all seriousness it's not better but just different.
Also to add to the logi/hic list I would say recons are also hella valuable. Rapier/Arazu combo or just go for full monty and get one of each race for magnificent *********. |

Fleets also tend to be a lot smaller, and typically you see a lot more cruiser and battle-cruiser hulls as apposed to battleships.
Part of the reason is because without bubbles, it becomes much harder to force a fight against someone who really does not want to fight you. Not impossible, just harder. So as a result, to get good fights, you need to at least PRETEND to look somewhat engagable. Hence you end up with pilots alliances that can easily field fairly sizable T3 and faction BS blobs, cruising around in T1 cruiser small gangs, because otherwise no one will fight them without burning 15 jumps and 2 titan bridges. Which is fun all in it's own right.
You also almost never get time-dilation. |
