If youre aiming for cheap and losing lots of them, start at the condor, it works very much the same way as the Hookbill in the High speed, range kiting role and is about 1/20th the cost for the hull.

From memory - If you use Meta 4 Large shield extenders it works fine. Most people make the mistake of using t2 and due to the higher fitting requirements end up nerfing the rest of their fit as a result. Try it - you will find it makes a big difference. But you're still going to lose to an RLM caracal. It has a much better tank, and better applied DPS. Wouldn't mind testing it to see what happen tbh. I'll be in Enaluri with HAM cara in the hanger approx 2 hours before DT. Feel free to drop by.

Hookbills (fleet issue) Caracals Condors?
I'm a noob to pvp myself however I've got the skill sheet to fly really shiny ships. Frankly speaking I wanna start off flying T1's and pop them repeatedly til I get good at pvp.
I can fly blaster boats, HAMS , pulse lasers pretty much anything at T2.
I don't mean to hijack the thread however rather than making a separate thread and flooding the forums with useless spam I'm asking in this thread. I'm 7 days away from torp specialization V. Can fly covops (anything).
Suggestions in light of this would be appreciated. It's not a starter character.
EDIT: Not a new character but new to pvp.
The RLM caracal will give you by far (provided you nanofit) the largest engagement profile. Which in turn will allow you to engage more ships, get more fights, and learn faster. |

The key to successful piloting in the Caldari militia is learning how to fly with warp core stabs and be effective. As such, I give you the "Training Kestrel"
[Kestrel, Training] Rocket Launcher Ix4
1MN Afterburner I Medium Shield Extender I Stasis Webifier I Warp Scrambler I
Warp Core Stabilizer I Warp Core Stabilizer I
Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I
Upgrade mods as you get more experience. The key to this fit is that the excellent lock range of the Kestrel mitigates the effects of the WCS penalties. Eventually you will be able to move on to larger ships such as the Corax and Caracal, but the fundamentals of missiles+tank+WCS should get you lots of kills from a very survivable ship. |

I would start with the caldari frigates since 1) they're cheap, and 2) they represent the combat styles of their larger counterparts, so why not learn each style without having to throw isk at everything. Get a feel for all of the smaller stuff before moving onto bigger and shinier things.
Merlin: One of the best brawling (in your face) frigates out there. Think of the merlin as a smaller moa.
Kestrel: Can be setup as either a missile kiter (like the condor), or a rocket brawler (that tends to kite within scram range).
Condor: One of the best kiting ships in the game. The DPS makes you want to bash your face into the wall when you're killing something, so just make sure you have a beer or two to drink while waiting for your opponents eventual doom. Think of the condor and kestrel as smaller versions of the caracal.
Hookbill: A souped up kestrel. Can kite or brawl. Very flexible. Think of the hookbill as a smaller version of the navy osprey. (Warning: flying a hookbill may result in talking in an austailian accent and subbing more accounts to fly multiple hookbills simultaneously. Not responsible for an increase in classiness and dashingly good looks)
Bantam/Griffin: Think of these as support ships that are far more effective in a group than flying solo. I would recommend trying these guys out while flying with some friends to get a feel for what they do and their role in gangs before trying to rock an ewar bird solo. Merlin and kestrel are both good. But incursus is IMO slightly better than the merlin.
Condor and hookbill are good but you may have trouble finding fights. Few people want to mess with a kiting condor because the fights are rarely good. I had a few good fights with rocket condors but so many players fit them to kite I rarely even bother with them anymore.
Hookbill used to have the reputation as the best navy frigate. It probably still is so you might have problems finding fights.
Grifin: nothing says "I don't really want to fight" like flying a griffin. Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=53815&#post53815

Hookbill isn't king anymore tbh.
They are a bit more balanced since the Firetail buff and Hookbill agility nerf. Fix this **** See Sea Pea. |

That is the proper RLM Caracal.
Use Fury ammo for Dessis and larger targets Use CN for when you need that extra range / shoot MWD frigs Use Precision for when your tackled by an AB frig / struggling to apply damage to linked frigs.
Caracal is good, but I feel that it is completely outclassed by the RLM Scythe Fleet currently.

Only one guy mentioned the Merlin . Versatile, versatile, versatile. It's a brawler or ranger and a good small gang boat. Dual web fit, blaster mse fit, autos and rockets even or rails and lm, etc. Ridiculously cheap too. I agree the Kestrel is also winsauce. didn't the merlin get it's lauchers removed in the rebalance? And a hybrid damage buff so why use projectiles?
I personally prefered the pre-balanced merlin. maybe only flown it 3 times since. That is the Way, the Tao.

I wasn't really thrilled with the changes to the merlin either. Basically made it the same as the incursus.
Now with the latest nerf it is basically a not so good incursus. Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=53815&#post53815

What latest nerf? I wasn't aware of any recent changes to the Merlin? I just don't like it much anymore would have been much better if they kept the split system imo as it could always spank the then all powerful rifter and most other frigs tbh. That is the Way, the Tao.

Why do people trot out "you can hit out to 30km!" as a virtue of HAMs? If your intent is to stay out of point range, why would you ever risk that thin of a margin?
HAMs go on heavily tanked ships you intend to use to brawl with inside web/scram range. If you want to kite, use RLMs. If you want to "snipe" with missiles beyond 50km, fly something that can fit cruise launchers. Don't ever use HMLs, they're just really really bad. |

Yeah. I came back and was shocked to find all my Merlins missing their launchers. Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. - H.L. Mencken |
