Originally by: xena zena the pod clones are not exact genetic copies of real humans, they've been geneticly engineered to live in these pods. Therefore things like nutrient intake and waste evauation are taken care of through genetic alterations that make these tasks easier. The pod clone can never leave the pod environment. The reason clones are permenetly encased in a pod is purely logistics reasons. Its far more efficent for them to just directly interface with the ships AI and computer systems mentally to do every task on the ship, and set simple sub tasks to be controlled by the ship's AIs. They never have to move, or have to wait for their arms to move to type a command or feet to walk to a console or anything. Likewise to eject from a destructing ship is instant, they're already in the escape pod, no need to run for the pod, or move or anything, instant. Likewise clones are grown in a new pod, no need to transfer or move them or anything, just reprogram it and launch it into space.
Actually Xena, in the story 'Hands of a Killer', the pilot hired the crewman. This shows that pod pilots do leave the pods.
You are hooked up cyberneticly to the ship and then enter the pod. The pod fills with ambiotic fluids that help absorb shock from weapons hits as well as inertia from high speed maneuvering. All ship sensors are linked to you, thus you are the ship. You see with the sensors and control all activities mentaly.
Crew is needed for mundane things, like repairs, and all the small stuff you don't really want to micro-manage. As a fan of Space Opera, I prefer the image of the captain on the bridge interfacing with the command crew, so I do so via Hologram (why not?).
Though a battleship can contain over 6000 crew, I like to hope there is lifeboats available and a good portion can get away if given time. Of course the Hologram and lifeboat ideas are just fluff, but for me make the idea of the pod pilot more enjoyable.
Either free the slaves or we will come and get them.

I would like to see the "crew" turned into a game element. Hire crews with different levles of skills and training that you have to pay on a weekly basis and your ship gets bonuses depending on how good the crew is.
Basic trained veteran elite
summat like that. (and yes this is the wrong forum for this)

Ah well. I guess I'll have to take all the fluff. From now of I shall pretend and lie to myself that I don't gotsa pod! But while it is EVE and nont Trekky, Star Warrior-like or even B5ish I still wish we could go back and do that whole crew thing...
What happens to the crew when our ships blow up?
