So if something is being sold for say 50m, and you put in a buy order for 70m, it will cost you 70m to buy the thing that costs 50m. What the hell? Why does it not just automatically scale down to the sales price?
I was just buying a bunch of Armageddon battleships and accidentally typed in a buy price of 170m, instead of 117m. I assumed that the wrong figure it was showing me was an ingame error because it happens for me somtimes. Well we all know what happens next...BAM. Hundreds of millions gone, just gone.
What the hell?
Correct this, its stupid and I know that other games dont have auction houses set up like this. This makes me so mad. |

Uhm, because EVE isn't like other games and the market is completely determined by the playerbase? Also, General Discussion is that way. |

No, it is fine.
It assumes that you are willing to buy an item for x price and will buy, at that price, all available items up to that price.

Because the code is bad and no one has fixed it. Also too many people think that stupid GUI tricks and lack of proper bullet proofing makes Eve hard.

In eve the players dont actually buy things from the market, everyone uses brokers. so if you use brokers IRL and you tell them that you want to buy gold at $1,400 the broker is going to look at the market and see gold at $1,287 hes then going to charge you the $1,400 and pocket the extra $113
dont think of it as a purchase price but as buying something from a broker . . . and double check your prices. |

When I played the RW stock market, I placed buy orders to a broker, said broker bought at that price or lower + commission. If I said I wanted GE stock at 70 he didn't buy at 70 when the price was sixty and get to "keep the change".
He got his commission though at an agreed upon percent rate or a flat fee depending on the amount of the trade. In EVE we pay a flat fee to the broker who (since he is working for us remember) should be trying to get us the best price possible. |

It also works the other way. If there are buy orders for something at 100 and you sell at 50, you'll only get 50. |

Change your broker sigras. If I place RW orders, my broker gets me the best price, up to the order price I set (which he considers a limit) and he gets a fixed commission of a few basis points.
I think most people when they see the behavior that the OP experienced find it a bit weird, but I imagine that the code is very crusty - and even if you could convince CCP that it should change, then its almost certainly never going to be 'worth the effort'. And eh, you only make the over-paying mistake once... (or twice...)
