I don't know really much about Eve, because I'm really new to the game, so if you know a way to make what I suggest without Eve being changed, please tell me.
My suggestion is based on the bad possibilities to chat in Eve. You have a channel system and you can type in...good. And you can even paste links in the chat...good too. But what is all the wasted space of the chat windows about? I don't want to minimize the windows each time I have a fight or want to do something at a station and if you have it open, you can't click through, so you have to have it really small. But if you have it small, there are these HUGE borders and that stupid icons (open a new personal chat, write only one line and then make the window "invisible"...you can't read the first word. If you only say Hi, you won't see it). For Alliance, Corp and Local Chat make small icons instead of their names and let me place them at left or right side of the window (I put them all together in one window), also the icons for Memberlist, Charactersize, Bold/Italic/Underlined and so on. And for other chats give me the possibility to assign an icon to it.
In a chat window I want to read the text and don't want to look at borders...

You can change the size of the font and/or even disable the character pictures in chatbox. There are buttons to do that just above the chatbox.

I know, but I can't change the size of the border of the window and the "insert text" field size always gets back to default after relogging

I know this has major server load problems:
How about an option to use a Mic and have voice comms from within EVE instead of relying on Teamspeak or Ventrilo.

This is not a very good option, because you are normally in about 3-5 channels at least and if 2 ppl speak at the same time you understand NOTHING. Written chat is absolutely irrepleacable (what if you are afk for going to the toilet? You will miss absolutely everything that was said) and though should be improved.
